Wow. I went to Istanbul and visited this incredible basilica (later mosque, now a museum). Here is my photo of the hand print, said to be originally the Virgin Mary's (unlikely) from a church that was destroyed, and then the tile was moved here for preservation. The hand symbol is also told to be a sign pointing to the Holy Grail. Cool stuff.

Some say Constantinople could be considered to have fallen at the point the soldiers of Mehmed II entered the Hagia Sophia
Legend has it that the priests saying mass at the time the massive doors were battered down simply melted into the walls, and will return to finish their mass when the Hagia Sophia is again a Christian Church.

We visited Hagia Sophia back in 1989. You could see parts of the crosses and Christian symbols coming through back then. Of course, you were told that it was strictly a Muslim worship place and we had to observe their rules for entering places of worship. No sleeveless shirts, slippers provided for you to wear over shoes, head covered for women, etc. It’s a beautiful place, but we enjoyed the fact that its Christian heritage could NOT be totally concealed or covered up! YAY, God!

But even if they were frescoes covered with plaster, is a very strange fact that they are NOT visible to the naked eye, yet are captured in the camera lens! Then we have a paradox, perhaps it should be investigated ... This is the most unusual thing about the crosses showing up. Just why do they show up on film better than with the naked eye is a very good question.
