Why the change in Cardinal Dolan’s outlook between then and now?
He evidently sold out, but why? What could Dolan possibly have been offered that is more important than the saving of his own soul?

No—it’s not a sell-out. It’s one of those post-Pious XII niceties. You know—love, peace, ecumenism, tolerance. Does the poor cardinal really believe that some Pax NewYorkus can apply in an all-out war with evil? If so, his advisors are as despicably “lukewarm” as Romney’s. And both suffer from low expectorations.
