I know nothing of the topography of the area, but most beachheads are flat or slightly sloping. It seems unlikely that fallen enemy soldiers would be dragged into deeper water, not to mention the horses.

Again, the water may not have been 'where' it is now.

Of course, they could have left the decaying bodies just laying there. Just like after the Tsunamis in Japan and Indonesia. Decaying bodies pose no health risks. (/s)
