Doesn’t quite work that way. The Orthodox churches would prefer that even after 50 years of monstrosity you stopped, for any reason, but about all they could do would be to praise you for stopping.

They note the ambiguity of heaven deciding to forgive you or not, since they can’t tell if you really mean to repent or not. Plus, you are in no way pardoned from Earthly punishments for your misdeeds.

So the bottom line is that they are glad you stopped, and hope heaven recognizes your true repentance if you have any, and if you’re going to prison followed by death and condemnation, that’s just a darned shame.

No “Get Out Of Hell Free” card, though. At least from them.

I meant "orthodox" to indicate mainstream Christianity (not LDS, Unitarian, JW etc) rather than "Orthodox". Sorry for the confusion.

It's still true in Catholicism and Protestantism that a mass murderer can go to heaven while his tortured victims burn in hell. Kind of puts a different spin on all that "we need God to establish standards of right and wrong" talk.
