I will suggest one additional emphasis, if you don’t mind:
Walking with God and talking to God are only two aspects. Listening for God is the hard part.
We pray for guidance. Sometimes we get answered - often as a feeling of great peace and that everything will work out, but sometimes we get answered by being told what to do.
That is when doubt sets in. Are we really being answered, or is what we hear what we want to hear to bolster our self image or our prejudices? We all have prejudices - personal preferences if you prefer.
I try not to bother God. Give daily thanks, commend the souls of the dead or the ones in trouble and pain, but asking for myself is not a regular thing. Yet the few times I have asked, the answer has been clear, to the point and nearly always something that could be chalked up to coincidence.
I’ll give one (fairly old) example. When I first got out of the army, we of course had to move off base and into a rental. Due to a series of problems, after 7 months we were in no position to meet the rent. Utilities in arrears, no food or job.
I broke down and prayed. Didn’t feel his presence. No little voice in my head saying “do this and all will be well.”
Instead, had a knock on the front door that evening. Figuring it was the landlord and it was more honest to just get this over with, I opened it and someone I had never seen before was stood on the step.
“Hi,” she said. “We just moved in to XX address. There were some letters there when we went in, and this one is for you.”
She was in the same house number, different street.
Inside the envelope was a cheque - a tax rebate. It was just about enough to put our heads above water again.
So - coincidence? Or an answered prayer?
