Letter from Notre Dame Faculty Demands Jenky Apologize [for remarks about Obama]

Faculty members say comments demonstrate ‘ignorance’ and ‘insensitivity’

Some faculty members at the University of Notre Dame are calling on Peoria Bishop Daniel Jenky to renounce statements he made during a controversial April 14 homily or resign from the school’s Board of Fellows.

More than 90 faculty members have so far signed the letter, which was released Monday to the Notre Dame student newspaper, according to John Duffy, an English professor at the university.

Jenky, during his homily, analogized the political actions of Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin to those of President Obama.

“Bishop Jenky’s comments demonstrate ignorance of history, insensitivity to victims of genocide, and absence of judgment,” the letter states.

Jenky is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and serves on the school’s 12-member Board of Fellows.

The board is the highest governing body at the university. Members are charged with electing trustees, determining how much power they might have, approving property sales, adopting bylaws and ensuring the institution is committed to Catholic education, among other things.

“The letter does speak for itself and indicates there is a great deal of consternation, which is a mild word,” said Donald Sniegowski, professor emeritus of English at Notre Dame.

The Catholic Diocese of Peoria felt the faculty members took Jenky’s comments out of context.

“Bishop Jenky has received this news with surprise,” said James Kruse, vicar general of the Diocese of Peoria in a release responding to the letter. “They must have not actually heard or read what was said and only what people have misquoted

I remember when Notre Shame used to be a Catholic University.

 

 

Many, many years ago.

It would be nice if the Holy Father would finally demand enforcement of Ex Corde Ecclesiae...and put some teeth into it for those universities that refuse to comply:

13. Since the objective of a Catholic University is to assure in an institutional manner a Christian presence in the university world confronting the great problems of society and culture(16), every Catholic University, as Catholic, must have the following essential characteristics:

"1. a Christian inspiration not only of individuals but of the university community as such;

2. a continuing reflection in the light of the Catholic faith upon the growing treasury of human knowledge, to which it seeks to contribute by its own research;

3. fidelity to the Christian message as it comes to us through the Church;

4. an institutional commitment to the service of the people of God and of the human family in their pilgrimage to the transcendent goal which gives meaning to life"(17).

As a Catholic and a very long time fan of the New York Yankees, indisputably the greatest franchise in sports history, I resemble that remark. In no way ought the University of Notre Shame and its football team be mentioned in the same breath as the New York Yankees. And, unlike Notre Shame, the following are/were all actually Catholic to the best of my knowledge (even with a moral flaw here and there): Babe Ruth, Tony Lazzeri, Jumping Joe Dugan, Joe DiMaggio, Reginald Martinez Jackson, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Derek Jeter, Eddie Lopat(ynski). Vic Raschi, Vernon Gomez, Billy Martin, Gil McDougald, Roger Maris, David Cone, Lou Pinella, David Wells (Catholic or not, a weekly Mass attendee as a Yankee), Paul O'Neill, Robinson Cano, Joseph McCarthy, Moose Skowron, Joe Pepitone, and too many more to remember. The least Catholic among them is more Catholic than Notre Shame and its faculty (with a scant few exceptions like Dean Clarence Manion, Ralph Martin, Charles Rice and and a few others) from Fr. Theodore Hesburgh forward. For that matter, Lou Gehrig was a Lutheran, Mickey Mantle was a Methodist and Mariano Rivera is a Pentecostal but each is far closer to actual Catholicism than is today's Notre Shame faculty.

The New York Yankees are God's team and today's Notre Shame is Satan's. If alive today, even George Gipp and Knute Rockne would root for Notre Shame's defeat.

I’d imagine the continued downward economic spiral will be shuttering some of these places sooner rather than later; many Catholic colleges will probably be sharing the fate of the Catholic grammar schools and high schools that in the past had been their “feeders”.

The Bishop is absolutely correct. Totalitarian regimes and rulers always seek to subjugate or destroy institutions and organizations that deal with citizens outside the direct authority of the all powerful state. The Obama regime’s objective is to destroy the Church’s soul by forcing it to do things against its conscience, or to destroy its charitable, educational and, especially medical ministries through fines, seizure of property and, ultimately imprisonment of defiant medical personnel, administrators and clergy.We are in a time of persecution. Loyal Catholics can expect no help from the faux, lapsed Vichy Catholics at places like Notre Dame.
