Sorry...but if you think you can become a god, you're not being honest with yourself. And if you can't be honest with yourself, who can you be honest to?
As for being "good citizens," hey, if you were auditioning for full-blown godhood, you'd be on your best behavior, too!
As "goofy" as Mormon theology is it will not cause Romney to hurt the American people...Romney's failings are personal; i.e. lack of core political beliefs.
Sorry...but if in 2016 YOU entered the POTUS race...and declared privately plus indirectly (publicly) that you were in a "god in embryo" on your way to full-grown godhood, that would be rather telling in a # of ways:
(1) That you would have a very basic core personal identity crisis issue at hand -- you don't even know your nature and would-be nature.
(2) That you would have a horrific character flaw...and no, that character flaw wouldn't stop at the sheer pride and hubris of thinking you were on your way to being worshiped and prayed to by other beings.
(3) That you would have a HUGE basic discernment problem. You might do just fine as local "dog catcher" with that discernment issue; but THE leader of the free world?
I am speaking empirically upon my personal experience with Mormons. You are speaking theoretically. For example, the Ancient Greek and Roman theology was silly and was recognized as such by their own thinkers. However, there were many ancient Greeks and Romans who were fine people some of them left writings that we read today as good examples. Many Mormon beliefs are absolutely silly as you frequently point out yet in some way Mormons are generally good folks.
