You can pretend this will never come out in the General election, but you are just ignoring the reality of a candidate in a cult.
He alienates the base of Conservative voters. He alienates the base of evangelical voters. He alienates the values voters. He is a poor candidate. It is far better that he be vetted now, before it all comes out later.
I’m not embarrassed by the truth, wherever I find it. I’m embarrassed by those who don’t care about truth, but want to be considered conservative... or Christians.
I fully realize that Romney’s Mormonism is a liability in the general election. But for other Republicans to go after him for it—especially religious figures—just makes the GOP look like it’s engaging in petty internecine holy wars.

There is a constructive way to raise the issue, but this isn’t it IMO.
