>>The problem is that materialism has become so rampant in the church today that people think they're entitled to perfect lives here on earth, that they have to have prosperity and health, and think that all that counts is physical comfort and physical blessing.<<

And those that do are soon going to find that those things can be gone in a very short time and then they will realize that in comparison to eternity they don’t amount to much. Some think that because they have all those things that God is blessing them but scripture tells us that He sends the rain on the just and the unjust.

Good point. Just reading Psalm 73 is eye-opening. Here David was "envious of the foolish when I saw the prosperity of the wicked (v.3). "For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men." (vs. 3,4) "Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish." (v.7) "Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches." (v. 12) "For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning." (v.14) But then God showed him the reality:

"When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me; Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end. Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction. How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors." (vs. 16-19)

And David came to the conclusion, "Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee. But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works." (vs. 25-28)
