...Here we sit 32 years after the 1978 revelation and we have one of BYUs most popular religion professors indoctrinating thousands of our youth every year in the old explanations. This is a potential disaster for the organization. We thought the old stuff would die a quiet death, but it hasnt. We now live in a different world...our old strategy of waiting for time to heal the wound has been shown to be a failure. So now weve got to rethink things.
SNIP
This is tough on our current leaders, because they knew and worked intimately with many of those brethren from a prior generation, and are loathe to throw them under the bus, as a disavowal of the ban might be perceived as doing...
...if Romney gets the nomination, then well see this issue blow up in such a way that the last few days will seem like a harmless firecracker...
A lot of people have expressed the view that a disavowal would destroy the Church, that there would be massive faith crises. Sure, this would happen on a small scale, like the 500 people who took out an ad in the SL Tribune to protest the 1978 revelation...
We dont know was an interim strategy that worked well enough for its time. But the problem is, that mantra was meant to preserve the possibility that God ordered the ban from on high, and a lot of older Saints understand it in exactly that way. And as long as we try to leave that option on the menu, people are going to continue to fill in the doctrinal vacuum with the old, offensive ideas. Those ideas will not die under a we dont know rubric...

From the article: ...if Romney gets the nomination, then well see this issue blow up in such a way that the last few days will seem like a harmless firecracker...
What's going to "blow up" on Mormons, the Mormon church, and potentially the GOP alike?
The fact that the Mormon church and its leaders -- including Mitt Romney who served as a stake prez & bishop & missionary prez -- won't repudiate its past racist policies.
This is like handing Obama a victory before anybody even votes!
From the Mormon-written commentary: ...Here we sit 32 years after the 1978 revelation and we have one of BYUs most popular religion professors indoctrinating thousands of our youth every year in the old explanations. This is a potential disaster for the organization. We thought the old stuff would die a quiet death, but it hasnt. In case you missed all the excitement last week, here's some links:
* Racist Remarks by popular BYU Religion Professor Spark Controversy
* Is Mormonism Still Racist? Comments from a BYU professor stir up a troubling past
* BYU Professor makes controversial statements about Blacks & LDS Church
(Oh, come on, Mormon non-profit leader Kevin Barney! Lds leaders do that all the time -- toss its past leaders "under the bus!" They do that by the constant hemming & hawing over the THOUSANDS of embarrassing comments made by Lds leaders!)
I don’t like all the Mormon bashing. I really don’t much care what Mormons believe, and I’ve pretty much liked all the Mormons I’ve met and would have no problem with an LDS president so long as he is actually conservative (Romney is not).
Saying that, if Romney is the nominee, his religion will be a huge issue. Anyone saying otherwise is full of it. The Mormon faith will be torn apart, made to look like a loony cult, called racist, etc. I know a lot of Mormons are excited about one of their own perhaps being the nominee, but be careful what you wish for. Things are going to get really nasty.
You mean he would lose the black vote?
...if Romney gets the nomination, then well see this issue [Mormon racist statements by BYU profs -- and the lack of any official disavowal of PAST Mormon racist-based policies] blow up in such a way that the last few days will seem like a harmless firecracker...
The GOP will be brought down as a racist-org by association...because here Mitt Romney apparently "A-OK" Mormon policies on blacks the first 13 years of his adult life...giving 10% of his income to support such an org.
If Rick Perry was besieged by the MSM for a rock with a certain word on its bottom @ his family's hunting ground...look out when the MSM & Obama unleash the "Romney-as-go-along racist" campaign!
We’re talking a 48 state Reagan style blowout with Romney in the nomination.
Lots of people aren’t aware that the ban was only repudiated in 1978.
If their explanation for it is as lame as the one in the article, yeah, this would be enough to destroy him utterly.
What? You think the non-black vote endorses racist policies?
LOL.
Republicans, do you know what a ticking timebomb Romney is???

No doubt they should have repudiated the old beliefs some time in the mid 1800s ~ and then sent out missionaries to the black parts of town all over the country.
Today we'd have black Mormons instead of black Democrats. Obama would be a Mormon!
We'd still not be able to get the Republican establishment types to nominate a real Conservative. Romney would still lose.
Get real, they'll back their "bro" Hussein, come hell or high water. Those people that were shocked that Samuel L. Jackson admitted voting for 0bama simply because he was black are either fooling themselves, or extremely stupid! His attitude holds true for almost all blacks.
As for religion: How could being a Mormon (Romney) be worse than being a muzzie (0bama)?
(Ya know, if I took your comment & MNDude's comment at face value, you're implying that only blacks care about racism. That implication is insipid, offensive, crass, and accusatory of all whites...So...why don't you take the time you explain yourself, lest you lose your credibility once & for all on this Web site).
Somehow I wager it will come up. Perhaps a month before the election in October?
Kinda funny how we haven’t heard a peep out of the O- Administration, but Catholicism is being savaged.
Explanation would be fruitless to a person like you with an IQ lower than his shoe size.
Secondly, there's Obama. He doesn't have a clue. He thinks Catholics are all criminals like the ones he knew in Chicago.
Then there's the campaign. There are two Catholic candidates, so he considers the bashing a two-fer.
I don't think they really know how to deal with Mormonism. They can do the black thing, but they already have all the black voters ~ and Leftwingtards are so irreligious they really won't be able to relate to any of it ~ "imagine that", they'll be saying "a church that gives orders ~ who believes any of that BS".
Romney already lost the Baptists ~ which is why he loses. His religion doesn't lose the race for him. His liberalism loses the race.
Racist. Bigot
This happened some time back when the black leidership decided it was better to be a major faction in a major political party rather than a minority group.
You know what...it's not just the "black vote."
Others care about racism.
Even secularists who aren't minorities have been "trained" by their campus teachers & other peer gatekeepers to be sensitized to racism.
Those who reduce this to "the black vote" have blinders.

This thread includes posts listing the...
...Book of Mormon passages...
...Book of Abraham (Pearl of Great Price) passage...
...and Doctrines & Covenants passage...
...that are still on the Mormon sacred books...
This shows that Mormon racism isn't just "yesteryear."
The Mormon tithes given by Mormons are used to reprint, translate & send these passages out worldwide.
Romney has given $MILLIONS to the Mormon church.
