The English word "Lent" for the 40 days of fasting before Easter is originally just a word for "spring"--the Dutch word for "spring" is lente. The word is related to the word "lengthen"--it's the time of year when the days are getting longer.

Obviously the Anglo-Saxons when they converted to Christianity were not living in the Southern hemisphere.
