the Church did not need to dogmatically declare the canon before Trent, since there was no controversy. only after some reformers questioned some books in the OT, did Trent formally declare once and for all the canon. up until then, the Vulgate and it’s 73 books was the Bible for around 1,200 years.

Eusebius had some interesting thoughts on those questionable OT books. It is found in his ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY.
He ranks some of them right along with THE SHEPHERD OF HERMAS which he considered OK for moralistic reading by new believers, but not sacred scripture.
Shucks! By his Eusebius’ standards they STILL beat the BOMormon by a country mile!
