Is he still pope?

Could you imagine Pope Benedict XVI doing that?

I’m not trapped in the past. Are you?

I have several rosaries of the Seven Sorrows that belonged to my husband’s aunt and grandmother. They date back probably to the 1920s, which is how long the family had been in that house. Good German and Irish Catholics, 1st generation.

As a Protestant I can see a time coming in the not too distant future where we will be holding secret services in homes.

I am not sure what Catholics will do, I think they have to have services on holy ground.....not too sure about that.

Careful. I’ve been advocating that line of thought for over a year now here on FR and at best I get confused “WTF’s” at worst I get out and out defense of the state having the power to grant you permission to marry.

We’ll need advice from the Christians in Red China and Iran on how they do it.

I am not sure what Catholics will do, I think they have to have services on holy ground.

Mass is supposed to be celebrated in a properly consecrated church building if one is available and suitable, but we have 2000 years of practice in coming up with alternatives in times of persecution.

When the Roman pagans persecuted us, we met in the catacombs. When the English made Catholicism illegal in Ireland, the Irish would meet in the countryside around large rocks ("Mass stones") which were used as altars.

The Japanese Catholics kept the faith alive for 200 years -- entirely without priests and bishops, because all of their priests and bishops had been killed by the state.

If you have the chance, there's a book you'd enjoy called "With God in Russia," by Fr. Walter Ciszek, S.J. Fr. Ciszek was an American priest from Pennsylvania who spent almost 20 years in Soviet Russia; several of them in the Lubianka prison, and several more in a GULAG slave-labor camp.

In prison, he would celebrate Mass in his bunk or on a wooden crate, etc. When he got out, he ran house churches in a couple of different places and cared for a large flock of Catholics and Orthodox -- until the KGB shut him down and ran him off to a different city, to start over again.

I remember reading about Blessed John Paul II when he was a bishop or cardinal, back in Poland, celibrating mass in a planned brand new Polish city which was not going to have a church built. The residents stood up to the leadership and celibrated in an open field mass. In time, a church was built on the site of the open field.

I'm willing to defend it.

It's incongruous for conservatives to affirm that family life, of which marriage is a central part, is holy/sacred/private...

...and at the same time say that marriage should be licensed by The State, giving Big Government the power to regulate, control, manipulate, and rewrite it.

The State will give up what The People compel The State to give up.

When I was a kid, we had a retired teacher that lived around the corner. She had taught elementary for about 40 years. Best friend of my Aunt. The kids in my immediate neighborhood loved to go to her house, and we would play Math games, learn how to write properly, learn about history and the such. She had a huge sun room type room that she kept like a classroom as she wasn't married and was never going to really retire. We actually liked learning from her and would go over after school, on breaks, when we had time. She said she was so glad to still be teaching without the constraints of the materials and methods they made her use in that time (1970’s— she started teaching 1930’s)! We learned so much in a fun
way. She'd let us help her bake cookies or cakes if we learned all of our multiplication facts, for instance, and we'd learn measurements, and fractions as well as baking skills! All of the children that visited her over the years graduated from public schools, but at the top of their classes, and are wonderful people today.
