It fails mainly in that it presupposes that the church you are making your pitch for is the same church to which the Biblical writers were referring.
A lot can change in 2,000 years. We don’t see Paul addressing the widespread problem of molesting priests in the New Testament. Why? Because the church of that era was of a different quality than the modern catholic church.
The Bible is full of examples of institutions going bad. When they do, God often sets them aside an starts over.
Then are you saying that Jesus lied when he said the gates of hell would not prevail against his church?
