They understood the futility part. I did not claim they had full understanding, your comprehension is out of phase. Some things are impossible to FULLY explain but formulating critical thinking takes the stupidity (Asinine questions) out of the certain equations. I.E. they argued that for a cause there must be a "primary" if you believe nature/universe is temporal. That primary also resides outside of time and space as well, meaning our intelligence cannot *fully* understand the mind of the Primary since we exists in the temporal world. People started to believe individuals who were "touched" by the Primary out of the Primary's will. Some believe Jesus was/is an agent for the Primary explaining the reason for our existence.

In the end, all that humans have is faith. Faith that the Primary exists or doesn't, that the Secondary our responsible for their actions. Aquinas took on the arguments and deconstructed each side then came to a rational conclusion of Primary and Secondary causation.
