Some Americans need to read the US Constitution's Bill of Rights, Amendment 1:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Their argument to the Supreme Court will be that the Bill of Rights only says that Congress can't do those things, not that liberal California democrats can't. They've probably got 4 votes agreeing with them too.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;Congress didn't make a law. The city enacted an ordinance.
The Constitution is the chain that binds federal government. Local governments are subject to short ropes and tall trees, if they step too far over the line.

Well, Congress didn't make this law, the California legislature did, and they are perfectly free to establish a religion or not, and to place any restrictions on religion that they see fit (as long as permitted by the California constitution).

Actually, this violates TWO aspects of that....
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
