Focus on the Family on Friday announced the layoff of 49 more employees due to decreased donations, bringing down the number of employees to less than half it had in 2002.
his new 7 percent staff reduction in the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based pro-family group brought the employee number to 650, down from a 2002 peak of 1,400 people, according to The Denver Post.
God has never promised us a certain budget number. Were sad today but not distraught about the future, FOTF Vice President Gary Schneeberger was quoted as saying. Even in these bad economic times people who care about the ministry gave us more than $90 million. Weve been able to help tens of thousands of families with their marriages, raising their kids and walking in their faith. Our commitment to that mission is unabated.
Focus on the Familys budget for fiscal year 2008-2009 was $160 million, which came down to $138 million in 2009-2010. For the fiscal year 2010-2011 ending Sept. 30, it further shrunk to $105 million, and now officials project it will receive donations of only $90 million to $95 million.
The layoffs in the organization founded by influential Christian right leader James Dobson in 1977 resulted from decreased donations due to the economic downturn. Long ago I suppose there was a time when we had fat to trim, but weve moved through that to muscle, sinew, bone and now were scraping out marrow, Schneeberger said.
The decision to cut more jobs was taken after Focus on the Familys internal audit showed that it could save money by merging some business and administrative positions without affecting client programs.
Dobson resigned as the ministrys president in 2003, and as its board chairman in 2009. Dobsons final Focus on the Family radio program, which reached more than 220 million people in 155 nations, was aired last February. Dobson and his son, Ryan Dobson, launched a new talk radio ministry in May 2010 called Family Talk.
The flagship Focus of the Family radio program, succeeded by President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Daly, now has an estimated 2 million listeners.
Most of the years of the ministry we were under a $90 million budget, Schneeberger added. Even so, we had a huge impact globally and believe we will continue to have a huge impact globally.
donations are down across the board. that’s what happens in a recession.
You think donations are down now..wait until limp noodle Boehner gets done. All tax deductions for charitable contributions are to be eliminated (in Obama’s jobs bill)...of course that only applies to you battards making above 200K.
Weeee. it’s exciting to see our foundation destroyed.
It would kill all non profits. Many arts museums will also have to close.
I find it endlessly annoying that, with all of the things that this administration is doing to us, all some people can find to bitch about is boehner.
Angel Food Ministries has NO food this month due to the economy. I don’t have the link....you can Google it.
“with all of the things that this administration is doing to us, all some people can find to bitch about is boehner.”
Obama can’t do much without the House going along, or did you miss that in your High School Government class?
I don’t often listen to Mark Levin, but I listened this past week. He went after Boehner hammer and tong, for negotiating from a position of weakness [when he didn’t have to] and for caving prematurely/unnecessarily on positions worth taking a stand on and fighting for.
Is Levin now on your bad books too?
In fact, if our party would quit trying to convince people Rick Perry wants to kill pre-teen girls and would get back to focusing on Obama, we could destroy this bill in the court of public opinion right before we destroy it in the House.
I can’t remember the details but I have a vague recollection of stories from a few years back that FOTF was making some troubling concessions once Dobson stepped down. I don’t know what came of it but if that was happening it may not just be the economy that is an issue here.
It still has good programming, but it is all family/marriage, having they moved out Dobson and the salt and steel behind the compassion that he expressed, and no longer really pro-actively oppose the political immoral forces.

He’s the weak link JB. He believes that compromising is a ‘good’ thing. I don’t know about you or your beliefs, but I didn’t vote for the people I did in Nov to ‘get along’. I voted to STOP and REPEAL the marxist agenda. Boehner seems to think compromise is the way to go. Of course he would since his ‘ox’ isn’t being gord.
Wake up...
I'm not particularly fond of the man, either. but I heaved a HUGE sigh of relief when he took the speaker's gavel from nancy pelosi. I tend to remember the "coulda beens".
As is evidenced by his dismal failures, Crybaby Boehner cares little about "the court of public opinion". As long as the elites, on both sides of the aisle, support him, he'll shove it in the face of American citizens.
