My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

I don’t know but I was rather hoping I might learn why Paul’s writings are viewed with such a jaundiced eye by some of the posters here.

Because, as Peter tells us, Paul's writings are difficult to understand. They may be (and often are) used to concoct nonChristian doctrines and antiChristian beliefs.

There is nothing wrong with Paul. There is everything wrong with Paulicians.

"You're correct that I forgot my link, so here it is. Sorry about that."

Isn't that the beauty of the internet. If you Google long enough you can always find an expert or out of context content that agrees with you. Why don't you see if you can find something that supports this comic book version of Catholicism HERE.

>>NT Scripture did not even start getting written down until a generation after the Ascension of Jesus.<<

It never ceases to amaze me to watch the comments of those who try to espouse a view without facts. Jesus ascension was somewhere around 33AD right? Now you say “not even written down until a generation after the ascension of Jesus”. Now let’s look at the facts.

Matthew – 37AD written by Matthew, called Levi, son of Alphaeus and brother of James
Mark – 57-63AD written by John Mark
Luke – 58-63AD written by Luke
John – 90AD written by John
Acts - 63AD written by Luke, the beloved physician
Romans – 58-60AD the 6th of Pauls letters written in Crinth and sent to Rome by Phebe
1 Corinthians – 59AD written by Paul at Ephesus
2 Corinthians – 60AD written by Paul
Galatians – 69AD written by Paul
Ephesians – 64AD written by Paul
Philippians – 64AD written by Paul
Colossians – 64AD written by Paul
1 Thessalonians – 54AD written by Paul
2 Thessalonians – 54-55AD written by Paul
1Timothy – 67AD written by Paul
2 Timothy – 68AD written by Paul
Titus – 67AD written by Paul
Philemon – 64AD written by Paul
Hebrews – 68AD written by Paul
James – 45AD written by James the brother of Jesus
1Peter – 60AD written by Peter
2 Peter – 61-65AD written by Peter
1-3 John – 90AD written by John the Apostle
Jude – 66AD written by Jude
Revelation – 96AD written by John the Apostle

Would you please point out which of those was written “a generation” after Jesus ascension? If you can’t, do you honestly think that those letters were not used as scripture and teaching tools prior to your RCC telling them too? The arrogance of RCC is beyond astounding.

Uri'el>Breathtaking ignorance !

When you persist in repeating the same falsehoods regarding verifiable history your opinions have no relevance or value to me.

In typical replacementarianism :

One attacks in ad hominem manner;
totally ignoring the discussion.

Blazing ignorance !

Calvinism is Bible based Christianity not re-branded Islam.
NL> (hint, Calvinism is pretty much re-branded Islam).

Islam has nothing to do with the Abrahamic Covenant.

Ishmael was born to Abram not to Abraham. (look it up in the WORD)

Allah is not the Elohim of Abraham, Isaac and Israel.

From Peter through the pen of Mark quoting Yah'shua:

Mark 12:28 One of the scribes came and heard them arguing,
and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him,
"What commandment is the foremost of all?"

Mark 12:29 Jesus answered, "The foremost is,
'HEAR, O ISRAEL! YHvH OUR ELOHIM YHvH IS ONE

>>(I have no doubt you would use force if allowed)<<

If you keep making those assumptive projectionist comments you are at high risk of being ignored as inconsequential. You have no basis or proof to even make such a comment. If you don’t realize that Jesus did not “force” you really need to refrain from discussions until you have a better base of understanding.

I have tried to explain the Catholic understanding of Mary and her role in salvation history many times to no avail.

Mary is what she is because Jesus is who He is.

It’s that simple and yet it is made complicated by those who seize on one or two words out of the contextual whole and to use as doctrinal bludgeons.

We read in Proverbs that God listens to the righteous man
Proverbs 15:29

And we read that again in 1 Peter 3:12 12 ”Because the Lord’s eyes are turned to the just and his ears listen to their appeal.”

Mary was the first and most perfect of Christ’s disciples and she has attained that which we all are promised by Him.
Who is more righteous? None, but she is made so by Jesus as we are all made righteous and perfect by His sacrifice.

How many Catholics have you hired? How many have stayed? No assumptions here, but you did mention that Catholics might not be comfortable, if I recall correctly. Why not?

Mary................Who is more righteous?

The WORD of Elohim says that her husband Joseph was.
Mat 1:19 And Joseph her husband,
being a righteous man

and not wanting to disgrace her,
planned to send her away secretly.

So where's the root in that mindset?........It's the standard love-hate mindset people project who remain under the law.

” They may be (and often are) used to concoct nonChristian doctrines and antiChristian beliefs”

I would say that to be true of all the Scriptures but Paul, having written more, provides more opportunity.

Anyway if you see Paulicianism breaking out, give me a shout, I'd be interested.

There are many righteous, as in upright, people in the Bible, but the righteousness we receive in Jesus, that which is the forgiveness of sins and which opens to us Heaven’s gates, came first and most complete to Mary.

IMHO it is about the replacement theology problem. Paul is the main apostle for the Church, Christ believing Jews and gentiles. Once the church age, the age of grace, is over with the rapture, God's program shifts back to Israel.

What a great topic. I think you have a good point. Also to consider is that it was Paul that was given the revelation to go to the Gentiles and preach the Gospel of Grace that we are saved by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in Christ Alone. The hegemonic churches can't abide by this because they have no tools to control the masses except by the force of the State if salvation is beyond their control.

Through her intercessory prayers and, most importantly, through her “fiat”, she cooperates with the Saving Grace of her Son.

Mary has no power here on earth nor can she intercede on our behalf...that is the Holy Spirits work not Marys.

Jesus said..."No man comes to the Father except thru me" To say any other is denying Christ's "it is finished"....he paid the price..not Mary...He alone interceeds for us...not Mary.

You said: As for the Catholics, they learned pretty quickly that we pray in Jesus name to the Father and believe what He said about the only way to the Father. No beads, Saints, or Maryology. No pagan “queen of heaven” rituals.

How am I making an assumptive projectionist comment, then? I pray in Christ Jesus' most Holy Name, I believe what he said about the only way to the father. What about my saints, veneration of Mary? Would that get me fired or make me uncomfortable at your place of business? What if I were an exemplary employee who btought in a lot of business?

Sorry; nowhere in YHvH's Holy WORD
do I find Mary called righteous.

But Joseph is called Righteous however.

>>So, you called Catholic prayers “pagan.”<<

Our gaze is directed toward you in great fear, to you do we turn with ever-more insistent faith in these times marked by many uncertainties and fears for the present and future of our planet. Together we lift our confident and sorrowful petition to you, the first fruit of humanity redeemed by Christ, finally freed from the slavery of evil and sin: hear the cry of the pain of victims of war and so many forms of violence that bloody the earth. Clear away the darkness of sorrow and worry, of hate and vengeance. Open up our minds and hearts to faith and forgiveness!” —Pope John Paul II

1 Tim. 2:5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Then let’s look at another Pope’s prayer.

Prayer of Pope Pius XII
In Honor of the Immaculate Conception

http://catholicism.about.com/od/tothevirginmary/qt/Honor_Immacula.htm

Prayer of Pope Pius XII

Enraptured by the splendor of your heavenly beauty, and impelled by the anxieties of the world, we cast ourselves into your arms, O Immaculate Mother of Jesus and our Mother, Mary, confident of finding in your most loving heart appeasement of our ardent desires, and a safe harbor from the tempests which beset us on every side.

Though degraded by our faults and overwhelmed by infinite misery, we admire and praise the peerless richness of sublime gifts with which God has filled you, above every other mere creature, from the first moment of your conception until the day on which, after your assumption into heaven, He crowned you Queen of the Universe.

O crystal fountain of faith, bathe our minds with the eternal truths! O fragrant Lily of all holiness, captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfume! O Conqueress of evil and death, inspire in us a deep horror of sin, which makes the soul detestable to God and a slave of hell!

O well-beloved of God, hear the ardent cry which rises up from every heart. Bend tenderly over our aching wounds. Convert the wicked, dry the tears of the afflicted and oppressed, comfort the poor and humble, quench hatreds, sweeten harshness, safeguard the flower of purity in youth, protect the holy Church, make all men feel the attraction of Christian goodness. In your name, resounding harmoniously in heaven, may they recognize that they are brothers, and that the nations are members of one family, upon which may there shine forth the sun of a universal and sincere peace.

Receive, O most sweet Mother, our humble supplications, and above all obtain for us that, one day, happy with you, we may repeat before your throne that hymn which today is sung on earth around your altars: You are all-beautiful, O Mary! You are the glory, you are the joy, you are the honor of our people! Amen.

Let’s look at a scripture reference to “Queen of heaven”

Jeremiah 7:18, "... the women knead the dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven; and they pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke Me to anger!"

Pagan? Yep!

If an employee btought a rosary to your place of business and prayed it at lunch, would you discipline that employee? Would the other employees whisper about it behind their back? Would you allow a hostile work environment to be created?

"It never ceases to amaze me to watch the comments of those who try to espouse a view without facts. Jesus ascension was somewhere around 33AD right? Now you say “not even written down until a generation after the ascension of Jesus”."

It never ceases to amaze me what length the anti-Catholics will go to to distort the history of the Church and the history of individual Catholics to make a point. Historically speaking, a generation is approximately 20 years. Your own post confirms that Mark was right.

Further, the holy texts existed that were later confirmed as Scripture, but among many, many contemporaneous works, some by Apostles, many by disciples who learned at the foot of Jesus. These included The Acts of Andrew, The Acts of John, The Acts of Paul, The Apocalypse of Peter, The Epistle of Barnabas, The Gospel of Hebrews, The Gospel of Matthias, The Gospel of Thomas, The Shepherd of Hermas, The Teachings of the Apostles, The Gospel of Peter, The Gospel of Thomas, The Gospel of Matthias, The Acts of Andrew, The Acts of John, The Gospel of Mary, The Gospel of Truth, The Gospel of Philip, The Gospel of Judas, and the hundreds of other contemporaneously authored documents eventually excluded from the Canon of Scripture. None of the works cited by you or me contain a listing of which books must be included in the Bible or excluded from it. Many of the excluded works contained inspired content. It took the Church many more generations to sort out the Canon of Scripture. So what is your point?
