My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

Bwahahahaha!!!!!

Only one woman can ever bear the Christ. God didn't call me to do that. So what? I'm only responsible to do what He calls ME to do. And when I do it faithfully, I will also hear a *Well done good and faithful servant* and that's enough for me.

Venerating Mary is not the sole domain of the Catholic church; they don't own it or own rights to the concept. People outside Catholicism can venerate her as well if they choose. The Catholic church does not have a corner on that market nor can it control what others outside of it do, much to their chagrin, I'm sure. Thank God.

How is it that you can repent for sins you haven’t committed yet, when you cannot even repent for or acknowledge the ones you commit daily?

Mind reading much? How do you presume to know what I do daily in regard to my sin?

Besides, do you really understand what being clothed in the righteousness of Christ means? That God does not credit to our account the sin we committed when we trusted Jesus for our salvation, which is a done deal, not an on again, off again scenario, depending.......

He who began a good work in me will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ and has given me His Holy Spirit as a deposit guaranteeing my inheritance. I don't have to be perfect to make it into heaven, just forgiven.

Yes, Judith Anne. It's jealousy. It's the knowing that we cannot have what your church tells you that you have that drives us mad with jealousy. It's seeing the love of the truth daily that makes us secretly desire to have a fallible group of men tell us infallibly what the truth is. It's not having the weeping statues or the saints of the day recipes that make us desirious of your religion. It's the red pradas. It's the holy lottery candles in the grocery stores that make us hang our head in shame that we cannot be part of that system of religion. Because we have no vicar on earth. Or Keys. Or wafer. It hurts. It grievious to feel the joy in your posts and know that I, too, could be there, if only...

/s

May God's TRUTH surround you today

Paul does not characterize any exception. For us to do so is to bring preconceptions to bour reading. In which case the tet does not serve. All we know is that he did not mean all.

Nor does it mean that we can just randomly add people to that category based on whether we like them or not.

So if *all* doesn't really mean *all*, then what does it mean?

And if *all* doesn't really mean *all*, the Paul was wrong and there's a lie in Scripture? Sure you want to go there?

I would think that you should know that there is no rule or edict that a Catholic has “to go to confession weekly”. That—quite simply—is not the truth.

As for Mary “*Mediatrix* and Advocate*”-—there is no reason for me to answer that as it has been hashed over on these threads for years.

As for multiplying prayers-—I mentioned that because of the many times on various threads that the praying of the rosary has been criticized as a form of multiplying prayers—or however it may be that one would want to phrase it.

I’m inclined to think that you may realize that I was offering an example of claims about what the Church teaches that are not true. I don’t see that the examples offered require a microscopic investigation.

MD: “Paul does not characterize any exception. For us to do so is to bring preconceptions to bour reading. In which case the tet does not serve. All we know is that he did not mean all.”

mm: Actually, the text is quite clear that it includes all the human race with the exception of Jesus. Mary was born of a human mother and father. She is included in that *all*.

*******************************************************************************

Romans 3

9What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10as it is written:

“None is righteous, no, not one;
11no one understands;
no one seeks for God.
12All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one.”
13 “Their throat is an open grave;
they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
14 “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16in their paths are ruin and misery,
17and the way of peace they have not known.”
18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

19Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

21But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

I will also hear a *Well done good and faithful servant* and that's enough for me.

Then what is your fascination with the Catholic Church, and your obsession with our teaching about Mary? If you honestly cared more for your own spiritual condition, I'd think that would show in your posts. Instead, it's all "What about this Catholic thing and that Catholic thing?" Sorry, what you do speaks louder than what you post.

So anyone that has not been “dunked” is unforgiven and lost?

2 Tim. 4:2-4. “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears: And they shall turn away their ears from THE TRUTH, and shall be turned UNTO FABLES.”

Are you saying that God did not know every sin we will ever commit?

Are you saying that because He knows your sins, you do not have to repent of them? That just because He is omniscient, you do not have to repent? After all, you are not God, and do not know your sins in advance.

That's what she APPEARS to be saying. That this is a daily scorecard God is keeping, and either we win by repenting before the timer buzzer goes off or He wins because we forgot one.

HE'S OMNICIENT, Judith Anne. He knows EVERYTHING. Past, present, future. How many of your sins were future when Christ died for them?

So, why would anyone ever bother repenting of anything? I guess that's what you do, I can't wait to be there when you tell God, "Well, you died for my sins, and you knew what I'd do, so, give me my mansion, okay?

So are you saying that because God knows everything that you do not have to repent of your sins?

Because God also knows where we will end up.

If you hear that being said it won't be me saying it. I will say, "THANK YOU FOR DYING FOR MY SINS, SO THAT I MAY BE WITH YOU FOR ETERNITY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR FINISHED WORK ON MY BEHALF. TO GOD BE THE GLORY FOREVER. WORLD WITHOUT END. AMEN."

I'm pretty sure I won't be searching for "my mansion", I will be busy glorifying God.

But He is omnicient, He knew we would offend Him, He already died for your sins. Are you saying that your repentence has any value whatsoever? Filthy rags, remember?If it has no value, why do it?

I mean, I know why I repent, I just don’t get why Protestants do. All their sins are forgiven before they are born, they can never lose their salvation, God already knows their future sins, nothing they do is worth any more than filthy rags, what is the deal? Plus they are not under the dispensation of the Law, but under the dispensation of Grace. So, what are you all dogpiling about? You’re already as good as Mary, right?
