My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

Oh. Now, after almost 24 hours of mocking me, accusing me of whining, daring me to ask the Mod how much you have hit the abuse button, and telling me how completely WRONG WRONG WRONG I am, you try to fake Christian. I don’t believe you. Sorry. Who you are speaks much more loudly than what you say. Go ahead, call me a Catholic. Impress me again. “Nobody knows the trouble I see....”

However, when we do bring up miracles, they are dissed as unreliable or unsubstantiated because the RCC didn’t validate them, even if there are tests and scans that prove otherwise.

INDEED.

There are FAR MORE documented, medically verified healings and miracles outside the Vatican Ishtar-Mary Goddess cult’s conventional turf [NOT counting the healthy RC charismatic groups as part of that turf]

than there are within it.

And, I, at least, have discussed plenty of miracles hereon with whole threads about them from time to time.

Evidently some folks are intent on emonstrating most brazenly and vividly

THE WORST meanings of the term

“parochial.”

You don't seem to like Scripture given to you. I don't need you to believe me one way or the other. I only need God's approval. And you are correct. Who you are speaks much more loudly than what you say. You speak volumes. About both areas.

"Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine." 2 Tim. 4:2.

Post another accusation that I am a "fake Christian". It's your book of life that is being written by you.

Rather than that, you could just read your posts from the last 20 hours. That would be a great illustration of a fake Christian. What you accuse me of, you do first.

You don't seem to like Scripture given to you.

I love Holy Scirpture and read it daily.

I don't need you to believe me one way or the other.

Great!

I only need God's approval. Why? I thought you were assured of grace and forgiveness. Why would you need His approval? That's sort of Catholic of you.

And you are correct. Who you are speaks much more loudly than what you say.

If you can't admit you've sinned against me, a wretched Catholic, I don't believe you have the ability to repent to Christ. You speak volumes. About both areas.

Sorry, Bro,

I think you are as wrong as can be in this dept.

No way is Mary a co-pilot of REDEMPTION, SALVATION with Christ.

Y’all seem to have little awareness of the ABSOLUTE STARK SINGULAR SUPREME

UNIQUENESS

OF CHRIST’S STATURE, STATUS AND ROLE

IN THE FATHER’S EYES.

FATHER GOD HAS SET CHRIST’S NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES ETC. ETC.

There’s NOT A SHRED OF A CHANCE that

ALMIGHTY FATHER GOD would allow Mary or any other being of any sort to remotely horn in on the slightest

co-glory of any kind, shape, form or degree

to Christ’s work on the Cross, His shed Blood and His being authority over all.

The Scriptures are clear and emphatic on such unless they are read with such a jaundiced bias as to render them UnBiblical.

This is still a very shocking thing to me out of all the RC ‘stuff.’

It is as though a Vulcan mind-meld has distorted reality sooooo far out of whack for RC’s that nothing short of a Damascus Road Conversion can alter the distortions and untruths RC’s hold about it.

Where is the prophetic vision/insight like:

HE IS HIGH AND LIFTED UP AND HIS TRAIN FILLS THE TEMPLE?

There is absolutely NO ROOM in that exalted WELL-EARNED GLORY reality for ANY OTHER PERSONAGE THAN CHRIST . . . CERTAINLY NO CREATED BIRTHED BEING of ANY sort.

There’s absolutely NO ROOM for hanger’s on.
There’s absolutely NO ROOM for also rans.
There’s absolutely NO ROOM for relatives.

When Elisha? [always mix jah and sha up] met the prophets of Ba’al on Mt Carmel . . . the fire consumed the water, the sacrifice AND THE STONES OF THE ALTAR.

THAT is a HINT of the EXCLUSIVE GLORY ASSIGNED TO CHRIST AND CHRIST ALONE.

It may well be that for some RC’s, their misguided notions on such scores will be more or less ignored and covered in Christ’s Blood because their hearts are mostly right toward God.

However, there are no doubt millions who willfully focus unfittingly on Mary for whom such a focus will endanger their souls eternally.

Most of the pontifications on FR about Mary by the bulk of the Rabid RC’s hereon only serve to PROVE RELENTLESSLY our assertions about the inappropriate focus and attention given Mary.

It just won’t wash. White-wash a foot thick won’t cover it.

There are attitudes of the heart that leak out all over many posts, threads and even thread titles that reek of brazenly affrontive and even rebellious idolatry toward Mary.

It is not surprising that RC’s are blind to such. It would be shocking, given the demonstrated history, to observe the opposite.

You have skillfully and with class asserted more or less that folks not given to accurate Biblical or even by your standards accurate RC theology may well indulge in such idolatrous attitudes toward Mary. But they are wrong and clearly in the minority per your view.

That’s not the picture that RC’s world wide and even on FR vividly paint day in and day out.

THAT PICTURE is that the NON-idolatrous RC’s are by far in the minority.

And when one looks at the sociological statistics that have been posted repeatedly hereon—there’s little room for argument by fair-minded, accurate-to-the truth folks.

The vast majority of self-labeled Roman Catholics do not even hold the minimal cluster of ‘essential’ Roman Catholic dogma.

Yet, as I observed so often in the orient . . . it is just such folks who are most slavishly addicted to the idolatrous rituals and attitudes.

Another cluster are the hyper earnest and hyper faithful to all the cardinal dogmas and ritual duties of the RCC. They too demonstrate a huge degree and intensity of ‘faithfulness’ to idolatrous attitudes and behaviors toward Mary.

So, from where many Proddys observe from, WHATEVER percentage of RC’s who may truly hold a more or less Biblical set of beliefs and attitudes toward God and Mary—THAT HAS TO BE AN INCREDIBLY SMALL GROUP. I’d guesstimate it to be less than 5% of the self-labeled Roman Catholics. It may well be less than 3%. I can’t see any way that it could be larger than 15-20%—given what we observe on here, alone.

There’s no way even the most fair-minded RC’s, with few exceptions, are ever going to admit such things, even to their mirrors behind a locked bathroom door.

That’s very frightful to those of us who care for RC’s as individuals made in God’s image.

I have long observed that new denominations, congregations seem to split off

PRIMARILY

for psycho-dynamic/sociological reasons

—primarily—PRIDE—ego needs—turf—!!!CONTROL!!!—building their own kingdom vs God’s kingdom stuff.

Frightful.

“But after I have “testified” to its meaning in the jargon, THEN I think it's the burden of the other side to show I mean something else. How about that?

It IS our fault that we're misunderstood before the explanation, but when people insist, AFTER the explanation that we mean Mary is equal to Jesus when we obviously don't mean anything of the kind, that's not reasonable”

I agree that it isn't reasonable to attribute meanings contrary to those already stated so let's see how this would work:

MD says I'm a vulgar pagan but he means I'm a common uneducated or unenlightened person. So I'll explain to MD that when I say he's an insane cur he shouldn't take the common meaning of my words but rather what I've said they mean and so should others, it's jargon.

It's not reasonable because it requires us to say a person doesn't mean what he has said he means. But neither is it reasonable for anyone to expect readers or hearers to be familiar with everyone’s meaning or solicit it when they use common English words with widely accepted meanings.

With or without explanations your use of an English word doesn’t change the meaning of that word. Nor does attempting to use an archaic sense.

If you say I'm a vulgar pagan I have every reason to take what it means in the language I speak no matter how many appeals to jargon are made. I...I don't speak your jargon and I feel it unreasonable to ask me to start using it by accepting its vocabulary.

Every group has a jargon to some degree but jargon is suitable for use only within that group. Patent means one thing within the medical profession and commonly another without for example.

Ahhh...co-pilot is still a pilot and must be able to perform all the flight operations of the pilot. And he may in fact assist in flying the plane when necessary. Otherwise he's just a passenger in the right seat.

UNLESS I know you a LOT less than I think I do . . .

which sometimes I wonder about . . .

I *THINK* you would affirm more than you seemed to in that post. At the end, you sort of hint, sort of assert slightly that you believe in MODERN ERA miracles.

I think you believe in them quite strongly—though your criteria may differ from that of some of us.

Am I wrong?

Can you give any examples of modern miracles you have observed in your life or the lives of those close to you?

I mean . . . more than the great enough miracles of spiritual rebirth etc. . . . but miracles that any fair-minded observer seeing all the evidence would have to conclude were genuine supernatural miracles???
