My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

To dismiss them (those on this forum) on a regular basis as haters of Catholics or too mean to care about is about as wrong as a person can get. This is where the back and forth insults come about.

Oh, really? How long have you been reading these threads? I'm as wrong as a person can get, because I don't love my non-Catholic neighbor as myself?

WRONG!!!! DING DING DING!! I, Judith Anne, am an ordinary sinner doing the best I can to follow Christ Jesus, the Savior of ordinary sinners. You all get on here and try to tell us how wrong we are "As wrong as a person can get" and yet, have you set an example? NO. and NO. Do you all reign in the excesses of some of the worst of you, NO! Do you all continue to tell lies about Catholics, YES! But suddenly, you appear to be outraged because there is a Catholic sinner around here. Me. And boy oh boy, do you all give every appearance of enjoying a dogpile.

Now I suppose you'll sing a spiritual, "Nobody knows the trouble I see..." and accuse me of whining AGAIN. You all evidently can't handle an angry Catholic in a Christian way.

Would you care to discuss the great number of documented, authenticated miracles within the Church and the paucity of them within non-Catholic circles?

Here we go again . . . an evolutionist who believes in "miracles!"

Evolutionism is based on nothing other than the assumption that one may know exactly how the universe was created by observing its processes today . . . the exact same analogy that, followed consistently, would deny all miracles whatsoever. Is there any clearer proof that "Theistic evolutionists" who believe in magic babies and magic wafers reject creationism for purely sociological reasons?

In my research and experience, miracles from God can not be proven...Since, we walk by faith, not by sight...Miracles happen, but we can not possibly prove that God performed the miracles...And neither can your religion...

Your ignorance of miracles happening in non Catholic circles would disqualify you from any conversation concerning miracles...

Just as I thought, you've got nothing, confirming yet again why non-Catholics are so uncomfortable discussing miracles.

FOTFLOL!!!!!!!

I know! Isn't it absolutely frightening how the most "sophisticated" religious person often picks his beliefs for purely sociological reasons?

"I can't believe in that because that's what those people believe!" No logic, no consistency, no reasoning . . . just "us" vs. "them!"

Pathetic!

Oh, you mean how the universe was created miraculously in six days some 5771 years ago? Oh wait. Catholics don't believe in that miracle.

How about how a snake spoke to Eve?

Oops. They don't believe in that one either.

How about how Metushelach lived for . . . ?

Oops. Another one gone.

And how at the Tower of Babel everyone was speaking Hebrew (like everyone always had) when suddenly . . . !

Oh wait. That didn't happen either.

We return now to our magical babies and magical wafers.

"Would you mind sharing the list with the rest of us?"

Because he is keeping files on each of us and must ensure that the cross references are maintained and current for immediate retrieval should an opportunity to bash a Catholic or the Church arise.

Ping me when you talk about me.

I don't know, Judith Anne. You seem to be the one following the BeATTITUDES around here. I can only give you God's word about being "an ordinary sinner doing the best I can to follow Christ Jesus, the Savior of ordinary sinners."

"But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved:) and hath raised us up together and made us sit together in Heavenly places in Christ." Eph. 2:4-6.

You don't have to be dead in your sins, doing your best (which will never be good enough) to follow Christ Jesus. You can be saved by the grace of God, quickened together (made alive) with Christ, and raised up to sit in Heavenly places in Christ. Because God is rich in mercy and He has great love for us.

Are you saying that Catholics don't believe that God created the universe or that we don't all share your time line. Because if it is the later there are some other non-Catholic buffoons on this thread that insist that you are off by at least 1200 years. LOL

It works better when you ping your response to the person you're responding to. Unless of course you were speaking of Natural Law (the person you pinged), in which case your response makes perfect sense.

I'm not uncomfortable discussing miracles.

Jesus Christ is God, born of a virgin, made water into wine, healed the sick, raised the dead, died for our sins, resurrected and will come again.

I certainly have no problem with Creation Week, the Noah Flood, the age of Patriarchs, the parting of the Red Sea and so on.

I know all of this is true. Indeed, God is Truth. A thing is because He said it. It is because He said it that it is.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. - Genesis 1:3

By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. - Psalms 33:6

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. – John 1:1-4

And again:

The peaks indicate harmonics in the sound waves that filled the early, dense universe. Until some 300,000 years after the Big Bang, the universe was so hot that matter and radiation were entangled in a kind of soup in which sound waves (pressure waves) could vibrate. The CMB is a relic of the moment when the universe had cooled enough so that photons could “decouple” from electrons, protons, and neutrons; then atoms formed and light went on its way.

The Universe may be flat but it is nevertheless musical

And for further information, click here.

Indeed, I not only believe in miracles, I rely on them.

I am a miracle thanks be to God!

God's Name is I AM, YHwH (He IS), Alpha and Omega, the Creator, El Shaddai!

Is it for good or for evil then that those who worshiped Mithra then became worshipers of God, through His Son Jesus Christ, through the actions of the Holy Spirit?

Regardless of the apostasy protestants accuse Catholics of committing, Catholics are Christians who worship the one true God. We do not pretend to worship God while worshiping someone or something else. We do not pretend it is Jesus to whom we owe our allegiance when in reality it is really someone or something else. We do not pretend that it is Jesus we follow when all the while following some secret pagan god.

There are no secret meetings or words or codes that only Catholics know. Our Mass is open to anyone who wishes to attend and though a non Catholic may not understand all that happens there, the information is freely and readily available for any who wish to find it and learn it.

That is the crux of my argument with protestants here, who disparage Catholicism as if it is a totally foreign cult and not a Christian religion. I have no problem with disagreements over doctrine, over theology or over practices. We all love God and that is enough for me, though not enough for others.

Just as I am not perfect in my understanding of all Scripture has to say, neither are they but I do not engage in character assassination or attacks because of it. I am said that anyone here does.

You know there was a lot of discussion about Judaizers and the Way. Would the old be kept or left behind for the new?

God uses who and what He will to draw men to Himself.

"Or else what?"

Or else someone will dredge up an 8 year old post, completely out of context, and drag it into the current thread in violation of forum rules, to insinuate that you are a satan worshiper or worse. Typical passive aggressive behavior.
