I'll charitably assume a socialist reporter selectively quoted the Pope's words to make the point he wanted to make. Nevertheless, the Founding Fathers were on to this sort of thing long ago:

In no instance have they been seen as the guardians of the liberties of the people. Rulers who wished to subvert the public liberty have found in the clergy convenient auxiliaries.
