Because the LDS believe and teach that they are Israel. In their Patriarchal Blessing, it usually lists what tribe of Israel the person belongs to. If I convert, can I choose my tribe? I pick the tribe of Bronfman because they own most of MCA (which controls RCA and Universal Studios) so I can be entertained, Hees Bancorp (so I can get a cheap mortgage), John Labatt (in case I get thirsty) and Seagram's (in case I get really thirsty).

LOL, and no. They pick for you. They actually used to teach that you got a ‘spiritual blood transfusion’ at baptism that changed your blood to Israelite blood. DNA has kinda stopped that theory.
