“Obviously the United States is not a Catholic country. A great many American Catholics have become so inured to that fact that they seem to place the authority of our Constitution above that of the Popes.”
Just as they should on matters of state. On matters of faith, look to the pope.
“”Just as they should on matters of state””
We exist in a secular state that has allowed immoralities in the realm of Economics and Social teaching.
Correct teaching in these matters can only come through correct teaching of faith. The State will collapse by not understanding this.
The collapse is already upon us,
WADR, I'll look to the Bible instead.
On matters of faith, look to the pope
“Just as they should on matters of state. On matters of faith, look to the pope.”
If it were only that easy. State has the disconcerting habit of overlapping faith! Consider:
The ethics and Christian consideration of the Just War.
The use of resources to assure a Christian attitude towards others’ needs.
What is our Christian responsibility to the poor?
Do Christians have a responsibility to use non-violence and withhold cooperation with a government committing offenses against Christian morality?
These aren’t “Catholic” concerns. These are concerns for every Christian.
I wish it were easy to determine what to do, when to follow and when not.
Rendering to Caesar is all well and good, but at different points, Caesar martyred a lot of Catholics who chose to follow Peter.
