Nestorius said that it was wrong to call Mary Theotokos ("God-bearer", which we would translate as "Mother of God" in English -- the Gk "-tokos" means bear in the sense of "to bear a child; give birth to"), but she could be called Christotokos ("Christ-bearer").

When he was pressed on how the second could be right but not the first (isn't Christ God?), he ended up saying something that sounded suspiciously like the idea that there was a divine Jesus, who wasn't born of a woman, and a human Jesus, who was, and they were somehow co-located or connected, but still two persons, not one.
