Mormons accepted beheading as a form of punishment in Utah until the 19th century, as did the Vatican.

Well, closer and more relevant to our times, the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers accepted be-a-heading as a form of reward in the 1970s, so there!

So why is the author selecting beheading and holding it up as if it cruel or unusual?

Beheading with a dull knife, slowly, as many Muslims are want to do is cruel and unusual. Never watched the gruesome videos of the killing of the Italian by muslims? A Clean beheading with a large sword or axe or the guillotine is not cruel but muslims, of modern times at least, don't do it that way. Your arguments are phony and full of sh**.

It was how persons of high rank were executed in England
in Tudor times. Expert swordsmen were brought in for some
‘beheadings’, that the end be quick and merciful.

Saudi employ a corps of such swordsmen for executions.
Pretty good I hear, they are supposed to do a quick job

It's only the 80% which make the other 20% look bad.

But, seriously, while Mad Mo didn't invent beheading, his followers have made it ever more cruel.

Europe did the opposite. In Medieval England, for instance, beheading was a capital punishment reserved for nobility using a skillful axeman, as opposed to hanging which was reserved for commoners. The hangmen in those days lacked the knowledge or sophistication of the modern equivalent. Those hanged were stood on a cart which pulled out from under them, resulting in slow strangulation. The victims relatives and sometimes the executioners would often pull on the legs of the dangling victims to lessen their suffering and hasten their demise.

By the time Queen Elizabeth I took the throne of England, beheading had become so occasional that skilled axemen were in short supply, as recorded by the botched beheading of her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots.

Even the French were horrified by the gore and possibility of suffering involved from using an unskilled axeman, as evidenced by their invention of the guillotine.

Fast forward to your modern Islamofacsists who delight in the suffering of their victims with their slow saw-off of the head methods which are recorded and broadcast for the enjoyment of their sick followers and the horror of the civilized world.

Long story short is that the civilized world performs rare executions in a manner to minimize suffering of the convict; jihadis do it to maximize the effect on people convicted of no more serious a crime than being insufficiently Islamic.
