"A chronicle of the Cristeros War (1926-1929), which was touched off by a rebellion against the Mexican government's attempt to secularize the country. The film follows the stories of ordinary people from across the country who choose to stand up for their freedom. Caught up in a full-fledged civil war, they all must decide how far they are willing to go and what they're willing to risk."

****The current (Leftist) government of Spain has erased that history;****

It is interesting to see how Hollywood has protrayed the Spanish Civil War through the years.

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS (anti-Franco)
THE ANGEL WORE RED (anti-communist)
PAN’S LABYRYNTH (Anti-Franco)

Good call. You’re probably right. I still like to watch him in Lion in Winter from time to time.

Don’t forget BECKET!

Didn’t Henry Fonda play a similar role in THE FUGITIVE back in the 1930s?

Thanks for the heads up. It looks like justice may be done on film for a change. Viva Cristo Rey!

one of the first things done by the statist forces that you are defending was to attack Catholic education.

Not defending them at all. Merely pointing out that their presence was the result, as another poster pointed out, of a very different history than America's.

The Inquisition was still active and executing people in both Spain and her colonies in the early 19th century. There was, by law, no religious freedom. The death penalty existed and was enforced for heresy. Not unlike the present penalties for apostasy in Muslim countries.

IOW, the Catholicism against which the leftists of Spain and Mexico rebelled was a part of the state, of the oppressive system against which they fought. Far more oppressive than anything in American history. So, while regrettable, it is not surprising that the reaction against a truly oppressive Church was itself much more violent than anything in US history.

Yes, as that movie was based on the novel, “The Power and the Glory,” by Graham Greene, which was about the Mexican persecution.

It sounds like you're trying to explain away the leftists' actions. Their ideology was going to target the Church and religion in general, regardless of its level of influence.

Martiros de los Caballeros de Colon de Mexico, ora por nosotros.

I might find this film an occasion of sin. There is nothing like a handsome Latino gentleman, especially if he plays the guitar.

Please-don’t compare them. Bob Crane was a pervert. Peter O’Toole is a “movie star” and wonderful actor.
From “My Favourite Year” with Peter O’Toole as Alan Swann:

Alan Swann: Damn you! I’m not an actor, I’m a movie star!

[Benjy Stone and a very drunken Alan Swann are up on a roof as Swann attempts to shimmy down the side of the building]
Benjy Stone: Let’s *not* do this - it’s too dangerous!
Alan Swann: Nonsense! It worked perfectly well in “A Slight Case of Divorce”!
Benjy Stone: That was a movie! This is real life!
Alan Swann: What is the difference?

“For Whom The Bell Tolls” is pathetically biased; it is no wonder Hemingway killed himself after realizing who he’d been carrying water for.

Look at “Sahara” with Humphrey Bogart; the Frenchman says he’s been fighting fascism a long time, starting in Spain (he was included to give the illusion that the US and France were allies in that war, which they surely weren’t). In “The Guns of Navarone” one member of the commando outfit (who hesitates early on, then reassures the commander that he’s ready for action again) also fought for the “Republic” in Spain prior to WWII. The US government, with Hollywood’s cooperation, deliberately lied about Joseph Stalin’s atrocities, going so far as to arm him and turn over Eastern Europe to him at the end of the war. The Spanish people knew firsthand what Stalinism was, and they won their civil war because they saw the truth.

Americans’ self-perception in terms of our history is very different than the rest of the world views it; Eastern Europeans in particular certainly don’t view us as the “crusaders” of WWII. Once the Cold War started the anti-Franco nonsense died down; while we fought proxy wars he kept his promise of peace for Spain.

...could you imagine if Obama’s first actions in 2008 had been to outlaw the Republican Party?

Well, actually, yes I can.

Oh, RI-i-g-h-t. And your footnotes are where?

Just noting your hit-and-run-and-duck-and-hide.

Sherman Logan posted ANOTHER HOLY HORROR: THE CRISTERO WAR, a very informative citation (footnote to you). What did you think of this history? Does it challenge any of your presumptions? Did you find it interesting? Aren't you glad you learned something new?

LOL.

Are you seriously referring to a completely unsourced opinion piece as an informative citation?

Are you aware that ‘freethinker’ means atheist?

I can, too; that’s what happened in Spain after the elections of 1936.

The US already has new Jim Crow laws for white men, too.

We watched a few of the trailors that are posted on our Catholic/Political FB page and the thing is we did not see any blood. Shootings lotsa cowboy shoot em up fall dead but not any sight of blood. Which we “Like” no blood, we get it bang your dead.
The ladies that bring us Holy Eucarist get together with others as an Easter tradition to watch “the Passion of Christ” and that is fine for them,
We make sure to “not” view it as we “like you” prefer not to see graphic bloody content.

So when is this movie going to be released? This is like a year later and it still hasn’t appeared in theaters.
