"What can the Church do about it besides have an inquisition?" They could start claiming that the real Catholic Church is invisible and all the people who show up may or may not be members of the real and invisible Church. Then, no matter what anyone does, they can just say, "they weren't really a member of the real Church" and since it's an invisible church, no one can prove otherwise.
