It Wasn't Supposed To Be This Way

We had planned it all out. The day was supposed to be beautiful. It was supposed to be a joyful bicycle ride. We were supposed to laugh together as we always did. As the driver tearfully agrees, we weren’t supposed to be hit by that truck.

We had planned to meet our families to go to the game. Our wives were supposed to chat endlessly as they always did. We weren’t supposed to meet them at the hospital.

We had planned to ride again on Sunday again with our wives and children. After Sunday services we were supposed to enjoy another day of fellowship. We weren’t supposed to say goodbye.

We had planned a ministry through our love of cycling. We were supposed to use it to lead others to Christ. I wasn’t supposed to try to continue it without his unending enthusiasm and ceaseless spontaneity.

We had planned ways to help our kids grow up knowing the love of God. Our children were supposed to play carelessly together. I wasn’t supposed to be the one to teach his precious little girl to ride her bike last Sunday.

My plans so carefully prepared are no more. What I thought I knew of You is clouded within a menacing haze. My friend is no longer here. His wife and children are without him, and it’s an agonizing reminder that what I thought should be is no more.

You said You have a plan for me, a future, and a hope. You say all things work for my good. I cannot see how any good was worth all this. It has been six months since that fateful day, and I was supposed to have figured out why all this happened by now. Despite my best efforts, I cannot see why. I wasn’t supposed to feel such emptiness.

Dear, God. I know You are there. In Your sovereignty, I reluctantly realize I may never know why. Please, dear Lord, help me to know and trust the Who within all my many unanswered questions. Help me to believe what I cannot now see. Help me to believe that You do love me as Your word says You love me. Lord, I believe. Help! Please, please help my unbelief. Amen.

Romans 8:38-39 (New King James Version) 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Revelation 21:4-5 (New King James Version) 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

5 Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”
