Catastrophe in Japan (Christians Assembling Aid)

At the request of Japanese Christians, Samaritan's Purse has deployed a team to provide emergency aid to people affected by the deadly earthquake and massive tsunami that hit the northeastern coast of the country on March 11.

Staff members are on their way to the affected area. We will be working with local churches to distribute food, water, blankets, hygiene supplies, and other aid to people who have lost virtually everything.

“The people of Japan need help, and we are going to help them however we can,” said Ken Isaacs, Samaritan’s Purse International’s vice president of projects, who is directing our response. “Our partners there called us to ask us to bring our expertise, and it is our privilege to serve alongside them.”

We are organizing a 747 cargo jet to airlift emergency relief materials such as hygiene kits, blankets, plastic, and water filtration systems. Our Japanese church partners have secured trucks to distribute relief supplies and obtained permission for us to enter the disaster zone. Local Christian volunteers are being mobilized to help with the response.

Samaritan’s Purse President Franklin Graham has conducted evangelistic Festivals in the Japanese cities of Osaka and Okinawa. The events were organized by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, which is working with us for this response.

Pastor Yoshikazu Takada, who was chairman of the Osaka Festival committee, requested our assistance. “Please come. We need your help,” he said.

The massive tsunami was triggered by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake, one of the most powerful in recorded history. Giant waves engulfed coastal towns and swept away houses, cars, boats, and trains.

The quake has been followed by dozens of strong aftershocks. Japan's prime minister called the crisis the most severe challenge the nation has faced since World War II. Officials have declared a state of emergency for a nation grieving the loss of so many lives while gripped by fear of more quakes and possible radiation leaks from damaged nuclear reactors at two power plants.

The twin disasters have devastated hundreds of towns and villages in northeast Japan. The official death toll reached 1,833 on Monday, but is expected to soar to more than 10,000. Hundreds of thousands of survivors have been left without adequate food, water, shelter, or heat as overnight temperatures drop below freezing.

Please pray for the people affected by this catastrophe, and for God to grant wisdom and direct our steps as we respond.

Airlifting Aid to Japan

More than 90 tons of emergency aid arrive to bring help to disaster victims

A 747 jumbo jet filled with 93 tons of emergency relief supplies from Samaritan’s Purse arrived at the U.S. military base in Yokoto, Japan, on Saturday. The U.S. military and Japan Defense Force offloaded the cargo from the charter flight in less than an hour.

The items are being warehoused on the base overnight, and the plan is for the military on Sunday to fly them on C-17 airplane rotations into Sendai, where our team is distributing aid to victims of the massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated the northeastern coast of the country.

The emergency airlift departed Friday, a week after Japan's twin disasters.

“This is a very difficult day when we think about one week ago the earthquake and tsunami struck Japan,” said Samaritan’s Purse President Franklin Graham, as the 747 was being loaded at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. “We are responding today with blankets, hygiene kits, shelter materials. We are here today to dedicate this shipment, to pray that God would take these blankets, this material, that He would use it to bring comfort to the people of Japan.”

We are working through local churches to meet physical and spiritual needs among people devastated by the disaster.

“As we go in Japan, we go in Jesus’ Name,” Graham said. “My prayer is that these supplies will bring some relief to an incredible amount of suffering.

Ichiro Fujisaki, the Ambassador of Japan to the United States, thanked Samaritan’s Purse in a letter that Graham read before the cargo plane departed.

“Many thanks on behalf of the people of Japan,” the ambassador wrote. “Japan is now facing a challenge never before experienced. Many people are still suffering. In this time, these extraordinary gifts are greatly appreciated. They are exactly what are needed now and in such large quantities. Everyday, I am confirming how true is the saying, ‘A friend in need is a friend indeed.’ Thank you again, friends of Samaritan’s Purse. We will never forget this.”

The emergency airlift included 1,000 rolls of heavy-duty plastic, 16,860 blankets, 14,304 hygiene kits, 21,408 bars of soap, 1,111 buckets, and 18,432 jerry cans.

Our staff in Japan is sending back reports of terrible devastation. They say that coastal towns look like war zones.

“The greatest need is prayer,” Graham said. “We need prayer for the people of Japan, we need prayer for our team. People are without hope. I want the Japanese people to know that God loves Japan, and God cares for Japan.”

Samaritan’s Purse began to respond soon after the earthquake.

“I've led festivals through the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in Okinawa and Osaka, and my father visited Japan six times during his ministry,” Graham said. “So the first thing we did after the earthquake was to contact our church partners in Japan. We provided money so that they could immediately start buying and distributing supplies to the victims of this disaster. But the need is so great that we also got right to work organizing this emergency airlift.”

Thanks for the ping! I really hope and pray more people chip in and donate. My husband and I gave out to the Red Cross, Samaritan’s Purse and Feed the Children. I really like Samaritan’s Purse and will give more once pay day comes.
