CANON IV.-If any one saith, that man's free will moved and excited by God, by assenting to God exciting and calling, nowise co-operates towards disposing and preparing itself for obtaining the grace of Justification; that it cannot refuse its consent, if it would, but that, as something inanimate, it does nothing whatever and is merely passive; let him be anathema.

The Council of Trent: The Sixth Session

You misunderstand my meaning. Without our assent of will, our co-operation (working with God), we cannot be saved.

Moreover, in reading the sixth session of Trent, it seems clear that by grace and grace alone we are saved, though we must do good works else we choose to reject God and lapse from Faith.

Nothing postures double-speak like the Councils of Trent.

So is it grace "alone" or are good works "necessary?"

Because if our good works are "necessary," then it isn't faith "alone"; it's grace AND good works.

Without our assent of will, our co-operation (working with God), we cannot be saved.

The natural man cannot "assent" to God because He does not understand the things of God and all his works are as filthy rags to God because "whatever is not of faith is sin."

The only person capable of an "assent of will" and good works is one who first has been reborn by the Holy Spirit. His will has been changed from self-love to God-glorifying, and thus he will want to obey and be saved.

No "cooperation" required.

Only the free, unearned gift of the Holy Spirit to guide our understanding of Scripture and bring us to Christ in faith.
