What did the Catholic Church teach prior to that?

That Jews were Christ killers, and that the currently living Jews are responsible for that supposed sin of their ancestors.

We witness truly epochal changes in the position of the Church.

Some fathers of the Church may have taught something like that, but it was not magisterial teaching.

Don’t get too excited. There is still a portion of the “evangelical” church that looks forward to future divine wrath against Jewish people after the Church is safely out of the way.

The church as a whole never taught that. Some church fathers and others did.
