Christ earth and resurrection did away with things He said before tke cross. For Example read Matthew 5:20 and you will understand. “20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

The cross is where he shed his blood, but he and his apostles testify that you receive remission of sins (atonement) by being baptized in the name of Jesus. His name is that powerful.

In Acts 2 they did so on the very day that the Lord poured out his Spirit. This is the new and living way that Paul spoke of.
