Yes, you are correct.....the Bible says that even the devil speaks in tongues and as with anything there are fakes out there.....but it doesn’t discredit the true believers

“I agree with John Wesley who basically taught that the miraculous gift were probably rare in biblical times and were even rarer in his time.”

“And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.” John 21:25

I believe the third world sees many more “signs and wonders” than the western world does - possibly because they are used to seeing more demonic works, they are more open to supernatural activity, and therefore the Lord shows His power in that way. One example - I have a friend who was a missionary to Costa Rica several years ago, and she said her group prayed for a man who had no teeth, and they all witnessed gold teeth growing in his mouth.

And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:4-8

These are people who had already accepted Christ and had lived with him for three years.

Over many years of observation as a non denominational Christian, I've seen a few folks who purport to speak "in tongues." What I've noticed is that they seem to want to speak in tongues. Their fervor breaks down what I would call the normal inhibitions to being silly and they begin to make up sounds they believe are "speaking in tongues."

Speaking in tongues in reality is saying something in one's chosen language with the intent of transmitting a particular message but having the Holy spirit impart the message "He" desires the listener to hear.

e.g. Speaker: "It sure is a nice day today." Listener hears: "Today is a good day to visit your sick mother."

Please understand that there is a distinction between being saved and being baptized in the Holy Spirit.

What do you mean "baptised in the Holy Spirit"? I think we may have different definitions of that.

Praying in tongues is evidence of the latter.

Praying in tongues is one gift of the Spirit, but not the only one.

***However, he does not discourage them from using tongues privately, even saying in v. 2 they are speaking to God.****

I see nothing wrong with this except it would be a real language. In public assembly Paul might pray in GREEK. In Private he might pray in Hebrew, something which the Greek churches may not be well versed in.

no, before Christ died, one could not simply accept him b/c they lived under the law....there were “rules” for salvation....

When the apostles went out preaching after Jesus had ascended and the people asked them what must we do to be save, their answer was “repent and be baptized and you shall recv the Holy Ghost, etc etc”....and then it says that the way people knew they had the spirit was b/c they were speaking in tongues...

Acts Chapter 10 is a good example

44While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

45And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

46For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

I know that. I hope I didn't imply that it was. I am involved with prophetic ministry at my church.

First chapter of Acts is post-resurrection.

You mean like Kennith Haggan of Tulsa Oklahoma who led his congreations in “holy laughter” and “holy animal sounds” (barking, mooing, growling) even acting like animals, and other nonsense claiming it was the action of the Holy Spirit?

You know every language there is on earth?

No, I freely admit that I don't know every language on earth, but ALL languages have similarities. The "speaking in tongues" I have seen sure sounded like literal babbling to me, complete with burbling the lips and breaking to gasp for air, etc. Normal languages allow for being human. Maybe I didn't witness representative samples.

Actually, the Apostles, except Thomas, received the Holy Ghost at this point well before Pentecost.

They received the POWER on Pentecost.

Jhn 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on [them], and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

“You know every language there is on earth?”

***No, I freely admit that I don’t know every language on earth, but ALL languages have similarities.***

It is easy to become familiar with a language without knowing it. I can tell the difference between German and French, Chinese and Japanese, Arabic, Navajo and Cherokee, but I can’t understand a word of it.

Remember the words of Shakespeare, Julius Caesar, Act 1, Scene 2.

CASSIUS
Did Cicero say anything?
CASCA
Ay, he spoke Greek.

CASSIUS
To what effect?
CASCA
Nay, an I tell you that, I’ll ne’er look you i’ th’ face again. But those that understood him smiled at one another and shook their heads. But, for mine own part, it was Greek to me.

...
You learn the difference when you spend too much time listening to Short wave radio.
