The author should remember that those who conformed to the state church did not always do so willingly.

The medieval mythology of heroic Protestants making the Bible available to the people and away from the grasp of a megalomaniacal Church is completely lacking in actual history. That is true regardless of how many times the meme is repeated as truth.
The growth of Protestantism is better explained by secular powers wanting to warp the Christian religion to their own purposes. See King Henry VIII, the German Princes, etc.
