Would You Vote for Someone Just Because They're Mormon?
Lds Living ^ | Jan. 10, 2011 | Ashley Evanson

Buzz about the 2012 presidential election is already in full swing. But with no real Republican front-runner, really, anyone is game. We’ve been hearing Mitt Romney’s name tossed around as a potential for a while now, but two weeks ago we started hearing another familiar name: Jon Huntsman.

While Huntsman doesn’t have the same national profile as Romney, he has gained status as the ambassador to China and might become more of a threat in the upcoming year. Can you imagine—TWO Mormons (gasp) both running for president?

Now, I understand my next thought doesn’t apply to every Mormon, BUT, I know of a lot of members who vote for politicians based on the fact that they, too, are LDS. And honestly, I know that I’ve been unjustifiably biased toward LDS politicians for the sole reason that we share a religion.

But what if Romney and Huntsman go head to head in 2012? Who will the Mormons vote for?! If their only choice was Romney, I bet a fair number of Mormons wouldn’t really give the other candidates a second thought. But throw Huntsman into the picture and we might actually have to do more research on each candidate’s stances. If they both end up running, it will be interesting to see how members react to the situation over the next two years. Do I sense a hint of BYU vs. Utah-style rivalry in the air?

We already know the answer to this.

Conservatism under the bus...

How do we know "identity politics" was at work in Utah when Romney ran?

Salt Lake Tribune, Feb. 7, 2008: Exit poll data from Tuesday's primary elections showed Utah Republican voters cared more about presidential candidates' personal qualities than their positions on issues, the opposite of the national trend in Super Tuesday voting. Source headline: "Romney's exit disappoints strong Utah following"

"Personal qualities"...Mormon talk for "he's a fellow Mormon."

To paraphrase what the Trib was saying on behalf of Utah Republican voters last election cycle: "Issues? We'll buck the national trend. We'll stick with & pick a fellow Mormon because we hold a 'personal quality' in common."

Now, do I think Lds Mormon voters were "bigoted" to select a fellow Mormon because he was Mormon? (No!)

We live in a Free Republic. Most voters already factor faith and other-worldly commitments into their voting. It certainly isn't the "whole" enchilada -- for usually most voters. But is it "OK" to be one consideration among many? (Yes)

I think Lds Utah voters were within whatever considerations you want to outline for voting for POTUS candidates.

However, if Lds voters voted for Romney either only or primarily because he was Lds -- I just don't think they should then turn around and point fingers at other voters who might take Romney's or Huntsman's other-worldly commitments to become a god into consideration.

(They can't have one standard for their religious brethren -- and operate on another standard for non-religious voters)

Many Mormons voted for the repugnant Harry Reid, so yes. Bob

No.
Nor would being Mormon automatically prejudice me against them, unlike, say, being a Muslim.

Are most Mormons pro-life? Heavily so?

Do Mormons tend to be pro-life in higher percentage than Catholics? It seems Catholics are kind of evenly split on the issue.

I’m curious, but don’t know. Thanks.

Romney got about 94% of the vote in Utah. Same with other states that had high % of Lds (AZ, Wyoming, etc.) Wikipedia says McCain won Arizona, with 47% of the vote to Romney's 35%. They also cite McCain as getting 70% of Idaho vs. Romney's 0% since Romney had withdrawn by then, with Ron Paul garnering the majority of non-McCain voters. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Results_of_the_2008_Republican_presidential_primaries Am I missing or misunderstanding something?

I wouldn't vote FOR someone if they were Mormon. I also wouldn't vote AGAINST them if they were Mormon.

I will vote FOR someone based on their platform, agenda and principles. I will also vote AGAINST them based on their platform, agenda and principles.

I will vote FOR the most conservative candidate on the ballot; be it primary or general election.

I don't see any evidence that Romney made any attempt to impose Mormon theology anywhere he has been an elected official or a CEO.

So his religion is his business in my opinion.

There are several good secular reasons why he should not be president.

Would the proposed LDS member encourage business growth, keep our country safe, limit political correctness, discourage abortion and reduce the size of government? I wouldn’t care if he worshiped Zeus...

So, if Hillary Clinton underwent a tea party conversion...
...encouraged business growth (which she would say she already has)...
...vied to keep our country safe (which she would say she already has)...
...discouraged abortion (which she would say she already has -- frankly pro-aborts have talked about "reducing" abortions)
...and then announced her "tea party conversion" will reduce the size of govt...
...and then she adds this P.S. "Oh, BTW, what led to my tea party conversion was a religious conversion...I believe I will become a god when I die..."
...you wouold really think that 98-100% of voters would ignore her "P.S." comment about becoming a god?

What's really strange is to see so many people so fearful of the liberal tactic of being labeled a "bigot" -- that they'll do cartwheels to not have to deal with the temple Mormon's claim that he will become a god who will be worshiped and prayed to!!!

If any other candidate announced their "I will become a god when I die" belief, that would relevant to how we weigh that candidate for POTUS. But because they have "Mormon" next to their title, they get a free pass on that point.

That is not necessarly the sole deciding factor, but one that must be considered.

Both Huntsman and mitt are rinos - THAT is their track record, and that record alone is worthy of a NO vote. Their religion plays a factor in questioning their reasoning processes - accepting an piece of fiction - the bom - as ‘scripture’; accepting a demonstrated bogus translation - the boa - as scripture; accepting things as ‘truth’ solely on the basis of a feeling or ‘burning’. Are those actions rational and condusive to an individual in office?

Hindu’s, moslems, hari’s, would also receive the same scrutiney on the basis of the world view their religion generates as well.

Therefore, Romney’s off the table. BTW, Romney is already a God in his own mind, so when he dies, nothing will change.

I will vote for the most conservative of the two.

So, I will support the most conservative in the primary. I will fight the good fight until the convention. If Romney wins the primary, I will fall into line for that general election.

Then I will begin work to come up with a more conservative choice the next primary.

Well said. I agree 100%. /Conservative Christian (nominally Catholic) Texan who has serious issues with Mormon doctrine...
