Yes, it is presumptous and it goes back to their claim that only they have any real authority to act in God’s name.

Technically, all of their apostles since Smith are ‘apostles’ but there are only 12 at a time.

When one prophet dies, then the member of the ‘Twelve’ with most seniority ascends to the role of Prophet,(YEA CUZ THAT IS IN THE BIBLE /sarcasm) and there are actually 15 apostles, the 3 members of the ‘First Presidency’ and the “Quorum of the 12”.

And, you are correct, els, Jesus didn’t have 12 yesmen to vote on if what he said was true or not, and he didn’t have his followers raise their right hands to ‘sustain’ him prophet, seer and revelator like the LDS do WORLDWIDE during general conference.
