The newly-minted governors of New York and Nevada have received a Catholic Mass in their honor and the events are coming under fire from pro-life Catholics. Andrew Cuomo and Bob Duffy, the new governor and lieutenant governor of New York, celebrated Mass at Albanys cathedral, where they received a glowing homily from Bishop Howard Hubbard as Sandra Lee, described by the New York Daily News as his live-in girlfriend, sat in the front pew, according to the New York Daily News.
We know they, over the next four years, will be deeply immersed in the work of evangelization by bringing about the transformation of our state and our society, and we assure them of our prayers, of our support and of our best wishes for challenges they will face, Bishop Hubbard said.
Though Cuomo and Duffy both support legalized abortion, Cuomo received Holy Communion at the Mass, which upsets Thomas Peters, a Catholic Vote official who writes at American Papist, a popular blog.
Im not surprised that Bishop Hubbard would do this. This is the same bishop who approved the free distribution of needles to drug abusers, he said.
Still, whenever a bishop clouds the Churchs clear teaching on the life and dignity of the unborn, and whenever he gives Communion to a politician of prominence who is clearly violating the precepts of the Church (and God), scandal is caused among the faithful and the Churchs moral witness is harmed, Peters said. There simply arent two ways of living our faith. Failing to mention the egregious disregard for the unborn exhibited by Cuomo and Duffy is the wrong way to express our faith.
Im not surprised by Bishop Hubbards actions, but I am deeply disappointed in them, he said.
Peters says Cuomos live-in girlfriend, Sandra Lee, is Catholic as well.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Culture web site is upset by the concelebrated Mass that Bishop Joseph Pepe of Las Vegas and retired Bishop Philip Straling of Reno celebrated with the inauguration of pro-abortion Catholic Governor Brian Sandoval.
During his homily, Bishop Pepe advised Sandoval to maintain a closeness to the people we serve. We have to listen and we have to listen carefully.
The web site notes Sandoval says on his own web page that he is pro-choice, but a spokesman for the governor said he takes his faith personally, and its important to him.
Brian Burch, president of Catholic Vote, told LifeNews.com in response: We are pleased to hear that Governor-Elect Brian Sandoval chose to begin this day by attending Mass.
Regrettably, Sandoval also persistently claims the legal right for women to kill their unborn children, a clear violation of the Fifth Commandment, and the constant teaching of the Catholic Church, he said. Because of his advocacy for legal abortion, Sandoval is clearly not in communion with the Church.
Media reports did not make clear if Sandoval presented himself for Communion. The U.S. Bishops have left the decision of whether to withhold communion up to the local ordinary.
About Pep and Straling, Burch said, We pray and hope that they made clear that those political leaders who persist in opposing the right to life of the unborn should abstain from receiving the sacrament.
Cardinal Burke recently reaffirmed the Churchs teaching on how public defenders of abortion cause division in the Church: On the question of a person who publicly and obstinately espouses the right of a woman to choose to abort the infant in her womb receiving Holy Communion strikes me as something very clear in the 2,000 years of the churchs tradition shes always firmly held that a person who is publicly and obstinately in grave sin should not approach to receive Holy Communion and, if he or she does, should be denied Holy Communion.

Sadly, Archbishop Chaput has indicated that it is the responsibility of the communicant to stay away from the Communion Rail. This is not correct. Rather, it is the responsibility of the Minister of the Eucharist to deny Holy Communion. This is a huge difference that goes against the Church's teachings regarding canon 915 as well as recent statements from the Vatican stating that the manifest pro-abortion politicians must be denied, and the burden IS upon the Minister to deny, NOT upon the communicant to stay away

"...there's a question about whether this canon'' the relevant church law "was ever intended to be used'' to bring politicians to heel. He thinks not. "I stand with the great majority of American bishops and bishops around the world in saying this canon was never intended to be used this way.'' -- from the thread [Archbishop] Wuerl: Why I Won't Deny Pelosi Communion
"An archbishop who says nothing about these sacrilegious Communions is teaching his diocese that being pro-abortion is not sinful. By flouting Canon 915, he is also teaching his diocese that obedience to Canon Law is optional."Related threads:

Abortion Foes Target Sen. Casey in Pa.
Pennsylvanias Bob Casey is one of just three anti-abortion Democrats remaining in the Senate after the midterm elections, yet pro-life advocates plan to oppose his re-election in 2012.
Caseys sin: He voted in favor of President Barack Obamas healthcare overhaul.
Pro-lifers in Pennsylvania are terribly disappointed with Sen. Caseys vote in favor of President Obamas healthcare reform law, Michael Ciccocioppo, executive director of the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation, told Roll Call.
We know that Caseys office was flooded with constituents urging him to vote No. In the end, on the biggest vote of his career, he didnt listen to the voters. Pro-life Pennsylvanians have long memories.
Ciccocioppo believes the bill would allow taxpayer-funded abortions and deny care to the elderly through the rationing of medically necessary treatments.
Helen Gohsler, president of the Scranton chapter of Pennsylvanians for Human Life, dismissed the possibility that the local anti-abortion community could support Casey in 2012, saying: He betrayed us.
Pro-life groups might use healthcare and other issues to entice evangelicals and Catholics they hope will oppose Caseys re-election bid, Roll Call reported.
Caseys office responds that he fought for provisions in the healthcare bill that would block public funding of abortion, worked to insert provisions boosting funding for the adoption tax credit, and opposed an amendment to the Defense Authorization Act that could have permitted taxpayer-funded abortions on military bases.
Reportedly, one-third of Pennsylvania voters who believe abortion should be illegal supported Casey in 2006, when he defeated social conservative Rick Santorum by more than 17 percentage points.
Thats less likely to happen in 2012, Roll Call observes: Pennsylvanias anti-abortion leaders say Caseys ultimate vote to support the overhaul is unforgivable.
I don’t really care about all the Catholic hocus-pocus, but if Sandoval is pro-abortion, then why didn’t the GOP do a better job of finding a decent candidate to run for the position?
Another reason the Catholic Church is a JOKE.
"Though Cuomo and Duffy both support legalized abortion, Cuomo received Holy Communion at the Mass,"
Bishop Hubbard is the same bishop who approved the free distribution of needles to drug abusers,
"Cuomos live-in girlfriend, Sandra Lee, sat in the front row."
Shame shame shame....Nothing but shame...'Bishop' Hubbard is leading countless souls astray...He will answer for his actions in The Judgement Hall.
Actually, the Church LEADERSHIP is the joke...
Prays for mercy for this sick twisted pathetic excuse for a bishop.
But taken seriously enough to attack.
If the church stands against what he does, remove him, otherwise it supports what he is doing.
Seriously, I do not take it seriously.
LOL....you seriously don’t take it seriously??..........ROFL.......
Really? In my opinion, any time Marxists undermine & infiltrate an institution, I take it seriously. You sure you’re a conservative?
“Marxists undermine & infiltrate an institution”
I would question your assumption that they were “infiltrated”
Go ahead & challenge me. If you were informed on Church doctrines, you’d understand how incomparable socialism is w/ the Church. I get the feeling, though, that you’re more interested in bashing the Church rather than knowing the facts.
Not true.
Actually it is you who are misinformed or not informed about socialism within the church.
What is the church’s position on universal health care in the US?
What is the church’s position on illegal immigration in to the US?
What is the church’s position on redistriution of wealth from rich to poor nations?
I’m at work so I do not have time to answer your questions as they should be answered. I will when I get home, though.
In the meantime, you can start here: http://www.usasurvival.org/docs/ccatholic-rprt.pdf
No need, I actually know the answers and as I suspected you don’t yet you accused me of not knowing what I was talking about.
The church wants universal health care for EVERYONE in this country even those who are illegal, paid for by taxpayers.
Open borders so all catholics south of the border can sneek in.
And of course evil rich antions need to redistribute thier misgotten wealth to poorer nations.
Also, they are for cap & tax.
