This is a rare case where Rashi and midrash seem unsatisfactory to me. Identifying this Luz/Beit El with Shilo makes sense, if Jacob’s inability to ‘reveal the End’ is taken to mean that he could not see it was Har Habayit that would be the final resting place for God’s presence. The kingdom was born and renewed there, and it was also home to the Mishkan.

Guess I need to consult my Rashi.

I've actually been to Tel Shiloh. Even brought back a small rock (from the remains of the former sanctuary there). Of course, I asked first to make sure it would not be an act of me`ilah. I was told that the sanctity of Shiloh, like that of Har Sinai, was temporary, and that taking a small rock as a souvenir was not sacrilegious.
