I realize, Natural Law, that God most certainly understands Latin. However, most people on FR don’t. What is the point of this?
St. Paul wrote: “I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all; yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words words in a tongue.” (1 Corinthians 14:18-19)
Granted you graced us with a mere 5230 words in a tongue (per Microsoft Word) that the overwhelming majority of readers will not understand, but the point Paul makes remains. Who is being exalted here? Who is being helped? Whose plain and clear will is being flouted?
In short, what a pointless and inconsiderate thing to do ... and you gained not one bit of respect from any ... and whether you yourself understand Latin is rendered a moot point. Knowledge and learning are wonderful ... but not when used as an elitist club to bludgeon those supposed to be rabble (for sometimes the rabble knows more than you think).
It was a prayer to God, not the other Freepers, though enough do understand or recognize it and it is the language I learned the prayer in. I would have expected that with so many professing to know the dogma of the Church sufficiently to criticize it would have to be fluent in Latin to have gained that knowledge.
Do you doubt it would have been received any better had it been offered in English? After all we are inundated with length quotes of Calvin and the Westminster Catechism on these threads that are not deleted.
Well put.
