As regards ‘getting away from mom’s apron strings”, my experience has been the reverse, those raised in the absence of religious formation are frequently from broken or disfunctional homes. Mom and/or dad are too busy and/or have no faith and it reflects in the child’s upraising.
While admittedly anecdotal, my own upbringing does not reflect this. Religion played virtually no role in my upbringing, but my parents are still married after 51 years and are as far from dysfunctional as is imaginable.

Using the MSM’s Tea Party standard, this must mean that all atheists are closet racists, too.
Atheists are definitely a solidly liberal, voting block.
