Grateful Forever
So we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture, will give You thanks forever; we will show forth Your praise to all generations. Psalm 79:13
Recommended Reading Rev. 5:13-14; 7:11-12
Our English word "gratitude" is derived from the Latin gratia which was associated with the ideas of grace and gratefulness. For the Christian, a lifetime of experiencing the grace of God should result in a lifetime of gratitude, expressed in praise and worship to God.
According to the Handbook of Positive Psychology (Oxford University Press, 2002), a grateful person will be characterized by behavior that is costly, valuable to the one receiving the expression of gratitude, and intentionality--the choice to be grateful. Those three are consistent with biblical traits of praise and worship: We are to "continually offer the sacrifice of praise" (Hebrews 13:15). God is "enthroned in the praises of Israel" (Psalm 22:3B), and we are exhorted to intentionally "Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness" (Psalm 29:2).
If you are a follower of Christ, you have experienced the grace of God. So how have you responded? Sacrificially, in a way that pleases Him, by your own choice? Make today a grateful day of praise.
God is never less than generous, even when we are less than grateful. John Blanchard
