Mormons (LDS) Know More About Bible Than Other Christians
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 09/28/2010 | Peggy Fletcher Stack

Posted on 09/29/2010 3:05:05 PM PDT by zippythepinhead

Atheists and agnostics know more about major world religions than many people of faith, while Mormons can answer more Bible questions than their Catholic and mainline Protestant counterparts.

Those are among the somewhat startling conclusions about religious literacy in America the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life drew after surveying 3,412 Americans.

Some of the multiple-choice questions were relatively simple: Where was Jesus born and who led the exodus from Egypt? What religion was Mother Teresa, what day does the Jewish Sabbath begin and what is the name of Islam’s holy book?

Others were more obscure: What is Indonesia’s dominant religion? Which Christians teach that salvation comes through faith alone?

About half the Protestants (53 percent) couldn’t correctly identify Martin Luther as the person whose writings and actions inspired the Protestant Reformation. Fewer than half of Americans (47 percent) knew the Dalai Lama is Buddhist and only 38 percent correctly associated Vishnu and Shiva with Hinduism.

John Morehead, director of the Western Institute for Intercultural Studies in Salt Lake City, had already noted religious illiteracy in the general population as well as in the evangelical community. But he did not expect Mormons to top them in their biblical fluency.

“Mormons tend to emphasize Mormon scriptures like the Book of Mormon rather than the Bible in their devotional life,” Morehead said in an e-mail.

Even some LDS scholars were surprised to find Mormons at the top.

Here is the quiz if you want to take it. I found it to be really easy (got 100%) and had very little to do with Bible knowledge.

I got 14 of 15. I missed the last question on the Great Awakening.

It was a rather vague quiz, so the claims of “Mormon's knowing more” is a bit of a stretch when used in trying to say they hold any truth in their doctrine...

Not that it would stop them from doing so as we have seen here. When your most powerful entity is the PR department, something even your gods bend to, it is just SOP...

Even though he has disassociated himself from lds, they still claim as a victory conversion. The question is why would they want to? When you read his writings is is completely off any sane reservation.

'cause they believed that the title "pastor" would give them a coup. A little research into him may have prevented that misstep.

Your presumption that Mormonism is false is... predictable.

Not really DU, reread your own post and the scriptures quoted there in, paying special head to the term brother.

He drew a circle that shut me out— Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout. But love and I had the wit to win; We drew a circle that took him in!
- Charles Edwin Markham

Sooo... Your response is that I am not your brother because I do not adhere to some religious test???

If the scripture said brother in Christ, you might have a point. Why do we Christians teach those who are not of their faith? (Because all men are God's children, even unbelievers)

As for your answer, Cain couldn't have said it better himself.

Uh, no the Bible doesn’t condemn anyone to Hell, people go to Hell of their own free will.

Soooo... According to you, no sinner will be damned to hell, unless they chose to go?

Man, did I join the wrong church! </Sarc>

It really doesn’t matter what anybody other than God says about salvation, nor are we to focus on those with whom we disagree in order to promote His Will.

He isn’t fooled. He knows those who are His. He does tell us there are those who will clamor about how they used His name, yet He will tell them He never knew them and they will be told to depart and go to the same place made for the fallen angels, the Lake of Fire.

God, including the Son of God, who is both man and God, is always faithful and has provided for us a way to have salvation and to have fellowship with Him. We can choose to either accept what He provides and receive rewards at the bema seat or deny all that He has provided in our Lord Christ Jesus, by denying His essence, and reject the salvation He has provided for us.

I know that you dislike this conclusion but Mormons are not part of that group.

I know that you dislike applying logic to this, but only Jesus Christ can decide who is his and who is not. If a man claims to follow Jesus, and changes his life to be in keeping with the dictates of his conscience and his interpretation of the Bible, who are you to judge him?

I flatly reject your assertion that you are my Judge, Jesus is my judge and he has already called me his. I will point out that acting as if one is Christ and judging others is a mark of not only apostasy, but of the Antichrist, I would warn all who feel so inclined to beware and be careful.

God bless

“No it means that Mormons can answer the two questions about Mormonism with much more accuracy than non-mormons who frankly don’t give a darned about when Mormonism was founded or who Joseph Smith is.”

Why wouldn’t somebody care about American history, such as the role Mormons played in it?

Some of my ancestors were Mormons. I am not nor have ever been a Mormon.

But my intellectual curiosity moves me to want to know about them, just like any other ancestors.

For example among my Mormon ancestors were those who fought in the Revolution, and some who emigrated from England, after being early converts.

Their religion was only a part of who they were, came from and travelled to.

So; what's the answer?

It's not my answer, it's God's

31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
If experience is my guide You will not hear me...

FOOL!2

Reading comprehension is not BIG in your life; is it?

Actually, you'll find me uncommonly accurate.

1. I ain't your BROTHER!

If you are declaring that one of us is not a child of God, I'd like to see the scripture...

2. What part of WITHOUT do you not understand?

Speaking of reading comprehension... the without went with the angry, fine be angry with me when I give you cause, never call another child of God "fool".

BTW, "No apology"="No repentance possible" = you in trouble!!!! and for more than just a discussion with me, cause you can't repent of anything while you have a brother you have wronged...(Just you wait till my big brother Jesus gets here!!!!)

What an interesting post...

We can choose to either accept what He provides and receive rewards at the bema seat or deny all that He has provided in our Lord Christ Jesus, by denying His essence, and reject the salvation He has provided for us.

Lurkers, please note that Cvengr starts out agreeing with me that man can't judge, but by the end, he appears to be telling us that by denying Jesus Christ's essence (a Trinitarian reference) that we are not eligible for salvation.

I will point out that the apostles did not accept this doctrine because it was not created until 325 AD, and it now being a condition of salvation, the twelve apostles are all damned to hell...

Logic it seems is not an anti strong suit.

Mormons believe in the Godhead, a word that is in the bible and that was actually used by the apostles...

Clearly, we must be wrong with the Bible on our side... </Sarc>

Wrong. I do get to judge you. I can not judge your heart that is left to God. However I can judge everything you say and do against the Word of God. That’s Biblical.

The Apostles never denied the Divinity of our Lord, Christ Jesus.

Men can judge, but discernment is our better course.

Focus on the object of our faith. Namely, through the work and provision of God in the Son, Christ Jesus on the Cross.

Let God provide.
