I think the first time I ever heard of Catholic Taliban, it was years ago in an editorial by Al Matt, editor of The Wanderer. He was referring to a brand of traditionalist who is, as I sometimes identify them, happy only when they are unhappy and they share it all too willingly.

Then a while back my friend John Allen, sadly still writing for the National Catholic Fishwrap, took up the epithet, applying it to those who practice a distorted, angry form of the faith that knows only how to excoriate, condemn, and smash the TV sets of the modern world. Not to far from what Al Matt intended, as a matter of fact.
Continuing the trend, Austen Ivereigh, former spokesman for Card. Murphy-OConnor of Westminster and now a journalist, donned the burnous in an interview with the aforementioned John Allen. Ivereigh is discussing the different groups who applied to participate in the Catholic Voices project he was involved with.
My emphases:
We didnt get an application from a Lefebvrite. We did get a few from what you would call the Taliban Catholics, who of course have become very vociferous on the blogosphere in the last few years. Theyre very critical of the bishops for compromising too much with modernity and not promoting Catholic truth as they see it. We also had applications from people in favor of the ordination of women, and who in general believe that the reforms of Vatican II have been insufficiently implemented, and who are angry at the bishops for the opposite reasons.
Im safe, I think. After all, I like The West Wing, Battlestar Galactica, Spooks (MI-5 in the USA), and look forward to the final season of Smallville.
And I watch b ba base
AIYEEYEEE!
baseball, too! And the news!
So, some of you WDTPRS readers had better examine your . AIYEEYEEE! AIYEEYEEE! consciences AIYEEYEEE! . sorry, I cant help myself .
I have been tempted, of course. I know where I can f fi AIYEEYEEE! . find these groups of TALIBAN CATHOLICS!
VIVA IL PAPA!
Maybe they mean the Knights of Columbus. We have been known to march in parades with swords and then make pancakes.
When they routinely kidnap and decapitate those that disagree ... only then we can label them “Taliban”.
This ridiculous practice of equating non-murderous orthodox and conservative Christians with Islamic terrorist organizations and Muslim-based fascist regimes must stop.
SnakeDoc
All it takes to be labelled “Taliban” is to say that some popular sexual behavior is wrong. One doesn’t even need to suggest that it should be illegal, let alone that practitioners should suffer any harm.
(The article is amusing, btw, even though I had to put the picture in a new window to view it.)
Campion's Law, 2005 version (per weegee's profile page):
Campion's Law!: "As a FR discussion lengthens, the probability of a libertarian or atheist FReeper comparing a Christian FReeper to al Qaeda or a Talibanic theocrat approaches one. Any FReeper who compares their opponent to al Queda or declares their oppenent an advocate of a "theocracy" has automatically lost that point of debate."
Wow, do you have that right!
And yet when someone posts items like this on FR
“Worship of men is a sin. Worship of men who steal other peoples money and give it to you is worse. Death will hopefully bring the rest of us Gods revenge for stealing from the rest of us. God can start for the money given to Appistry and NJVC.”
How are you supposed to take it?
I didn’t answer, becuase I figured the cat was off his meds....but repeated posts like this - or far worse - gets this board an odd rep on the ‘web.
I know some sites are far worse when it comes with spittle flecked pronouncements of God’s wrath on the US because of (fill in the blank).
It is easy to see how a lot of folks in the US would compair these people to the Tali-bauunies.
There are people who should be compared to al Qaeda, just as there are people who should be compared to the Nazis. (Not pointing fingers at anyone here; I'm speaking in the abstract.)
And there really are Christians who advocate a theocracy, though not many.
The original context of that remark -- as Tax-chick says -- was the reflexive tendency of some to equate opposition to pornography or support for chastity or modesty in dress to the Taliban, as though there were some relationship between saying that girls shouldn't wear revealing clothing in church, and wanting to stone them for going to school.
Or the catz got into the meds ...
The proper response to posts from crazy people or drugged-up catz is to ignore them, although one may post pictures of penguins, if ignoring is too difficult.
I’d forgotten about the clothing threads ... that topic did precipitate a lot of “Taliban” comments.

The way I would have taken it? I would ping the person who said it whenever I quote it publicly. And if I didn't know how to respond, I'd start figuring something out, because sure as rain someone else will eventually come along and say something similar.
"...always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect..."

penguins? Who knoew...
I wondered about the odd penguin post here on FR.
Is there some meme on this?
penguins
(I have yet to figure out how ot post photos)

There are several versions of the graphic. It's sort of meme-ish.
THat’s cool
I will try and fugure this out...
Thanks
An interesting site that speaks for itself. We here in America are too sophisticated, too understanding, too tolerant to buy into anything like this..it’s a must see.

I guess I’m just an alarmist.
I agree, we must stop this anti Muslim attitude before it turns us into sinners. There has never been a more peaceful, sensetive and understanding religious group in the history of mankind. Just look how they practice their faith in France.

In a couple of years we will be blessed with the same kind of quiet devotion as is France. But let’s be tolerant.
Two for the price of one! :o)
