'Cristiada' welcomed in Durango (Movie About Cristero War Starring Andy Garcia) [Ecumenical]
Variety ^ | 08/21/2010 | James Young

Taking American stars to film in Mexico's dicey Durango region might seem like a bit of a gamble -- and one that only grows when you consider that the film in question, the $8 million "Cristiada," is a historic epic about the nation's bloody 1920s conflict over religious freedoms, not necessarily a subject that travels easily.

But producer Pablo Jose Barroso of NewLand Films thinks that by shooting in English with names like Andy Garcia and Eva Longoria, the film has universal potential. And he says the drug-related violence in the region hasn't been a problem, thanks to security and other arrangements provided by the Durango Film Commission.

Visual effects supervisor Dean Wright, who worked on "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King," is making his directing debut on the project, which NewLand is targeting for international release in late 2011.

According to Wright, the film weaves a narrative thread through the lives of the military and political leaders involved in the Cristero uprising, with Ruben Blades playing Gen. Plutarco Calles, whose opposition to Catholicism led to the uprising. Also joining the cast are Peter O'Toole, Catalina Sandino ("Maria Full of Grace"), Bruce Greenwood ("Star Trek"), Oscar Isaac ("Body of Lies'), Eduardo Verastegui ("Bella") and Santiago Cabrera ("Heroes")....

Oh, awesome! I'll actually go to a theater for that. A really good novel about it, if you can find a copy, is The Fourth Gift, by Elizabeth Borton de Trevino.

With Garcia and Verastagui both in it, it'll have great scenic value and almost certainly be morally acceptable as well, even though the cristeros lost.

Viva cristero rey!

Ruben Blades used to be pretty scenic, too.

I’m not familiar with him. The guy from Lost is in it too - Nestor Carbonell. I’ve forgotten his character’s name, but he was the one with the eyeliner.

LOL - “the one with the eyeliner”! Ruben Blades was something of a heartthrob in the early 1980s. A musician too.

A friend from that part of the country told me his older relatives would talk about generals hunting down priests to kill them while their wives hid those same priests and worshipped in secret.

I do know that a fair number of priests were executed during the years after the Mexican Revolution. There was a strong marxist element in the leadership. Millions died and the result was glorified disaster.

Father Vega played by Santiago Cabrera (star from NBC hit show Heroes)...

Andy Garcia as General Gorostieta

Eva Longoria Parker

And last but not least, Eduardo Verastegui as Blessed Ancleto Gonzalez Flores

I hope they film it in Spanish. There’s nothing like a handsome man speaking Spanish ... ay ay ay!

***Taking American stars to film in Mexico’s dicey Durango region might seem like a bit of a gamble***

It must have really gone downhill since John Wayne made so many movies there, along with Glen Ford, Antony Quinn and Charles Bronson.

Probably Spanish will be dubbed in as a choice on the DVD.
