A Morsel For the Stupid Neoconservatives
Austria. [kreuz.net] This Sunday Cardinal Schönborn of Vienna praised the false Marian apparition site, Medjugorje in the boulevard magazine 'Krone'. The Cardinal recalled his then meeting with the youth that are there every summer. The young people could not see much in the village besides the stony ground and supposed poverty. But they sense: "Mary is near them".
Do you mean jews?
No idea, it’s what kreuz.net wrote, you’ll have to ask them, but there are people they define as Neoconservative who are not Jews, so, probably not.
There must be a point to this story, but darned if I can figure it out.
Neoconservatives are basically people want things basically as they are, they’re strong on the Church’s teachings on birth control and abortion, generally to the exclusion of general principles and reason, but they are to be distinguished from restorationists who want to undue the damage which has caused the crisis in the Church today with regard to vocations, piety, education and the whole gambit.
The Cardinal has already been reprimanded for praising the apparition which has already been condemned by the local ordinary and will eventually be condemned more completely in Rome by a special commission.
Incidentally, Medjugorje is very popular with the Neoconservatives, your Stevie Ray, Pat Madrid, EWTN types...
Again, so what?
Cardinal Schonborn is an ecclesiastical liberal who is good at anticipating the support of Neoconservatives who purchase his books from Ignatius Press and attend his lectures.
Of course, they oblige all of this very well, because he is, after all, a Cardinal, one who doesn’t want to do what he’s told.
So I googled him and see he is pretty young (65) and the descendant of European nobility back to the Holy Roman Empire, which is interesting. Have not heard that he is considered Papabile. If he supports a devotion to the supposed apparition of Medagorge that is not a problem until and if it is condemned, rather than discouraged.
I just do not understand the concern here.
I told you. He’s already been told to shut up about Medjudgorje.

Sounds like he is a recalcitrant Cardinal Archbishop using his long friendship with the Pope to protect himself from appropriate correction for his offenses. It would probably take a good deal more for the Pope to remove him from his see, which would probably be the only way to stop him. Sad and shameful.

the Cardinal is a brilliant man and he has many deep connections in Austrian Society across the political and cultural spectrum.
The last time a Cardinal was removed was 70 years ago when Cardinal Louis Billot’s was “forced” to resign over Action Francaise.
