Scholasticism was good for Western civilization in that it involved the establishment of the university. It also led directly to the concept of the scientific process, which has allowed the West to surpass the rest of the world in science, learning and industry.
The downside is that scholasticism tended to over-intellectualize Christianity. Clerics would debate arcane matters of the Faith. These debates usually ended with accusations of heresy being thrown about.
