Oh, the “opinion” canard again.

Talk about bait and switch.

Can you substantiate the claim that these are only “opinions” or is it just your opinion?

When exactly are your leaders acting as your leaders and not as private men when speaking in their capacity as LdS leaders?

Is that information available anywhere?

Is there a special light on the podium that comes on when they’re speaking to indicate that they are now giving their “opinion” and not speaking as a leader for the LdS church?

Already got “out for a bit”. Took my son on a prep hike. Getting ready for Mt. Whitney in a few weeks. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Hope you have/had a safe trip.

First of all, congrats on the future hike to Mt. Whitney w/ your kid. What a great opportunity, a memory that will undoubtedly last a lifetime. Chapeau.

Now, I always find it fascinating when folks who don’t believe in modern day revelation, who believe the heavens are closed, who basically have nothing but opinion, bash us for having opinions as well. It is true that we believe in revelation, as in days of old. But as in days of old, man is not commanded in ALL things. Obviously, the apostles Peter & Paul weren’t commanded in all things which led to disagreements among them. It happened then, it happens now, & undoubtedly will happen in the future.

We’ve never claimed to be a church solely based on revelation, albeit it plays a big part in our beliefs. IIRC you were a member. You don’t know this?

How do we know what’s revelation & what’s opinion? Again, you should know (maybe you never had a good understanding of the church in the first place), but here’s a couple general rules of thumb, albeit not the only things to take into consideration:

If the prophet basically states “thus sayeth the Lord” you’re pretty good to go. Also, statements & revelations that are canonized. Of course, personal revelation can play a part as well, but those are the general rules of thumb. Hopefully that clears things up for you.

We have never claimed that members of the church, or the brethren for that matter, can’t or won’t have opinions, or that those opinions are infallible. No bait & switch, just an apparent lack of understanding on your part. How long were you a member of the church?

I’m not sure what the big deal about church leaders having opinions is all about. Due to the lack of revelation in the rest of Christianity, opinion is what you folks are all about. With all the various interpretations, some of those religious opinions have caused quite the ruckus at times. Ever heard of the Inquisition, the Crusades? Difference of religious opinion still stirs violent actions today in places like Ireland, etc.

Martin Luther, one of the fore runners of the Protestant movement even had some interesting opinions about polygamy. Imagine that!

Thanks for the best wishes for a safe trip. It was, & a successful one at that. Have a great Sabbath.
