It’s going to be really funny when this girl rebels against her parents and becomes a Christian. People will be doing double-takes when looking at the church roster forever after.

A lot of the undisguised hatred of Christianity has as its origins many years ago, when religion was abused for social control and personal coercion. And while the vast majority of Christians have discontinued these practices, many not even realizing such things happened, much of the bitterness remains in those who were abused.

For their own ends, Christianity was terribly corrupted by some unethical and ambitious leaders. It was used to justify racism and segregation, to force marriage and sex or prevent it, to impose rigid and whimsical moral standards on others, to give preferential treatment to business, to control small town government, and many other unseemly and pernicious things.

Please note that Christianity had nothing to do with any of this, but it was used as an excuse by the abusers, and it was an effective excuse. In the smallest degree, the mood was depicted in the movie “Footloose”, but not about anything as petty as dancing and music. It was total, blanket control over the lives of people, done by powerful town cliques, using Christianity as an excuse for their oppression.

Censorship prohibited free speech against the power structure. The public were prohibited from work or commerce on Sunday. The sale of alcohol was limited or forbidden. Towns were split in half, white on one side and black on the other, often having a “shadow” government, with a black religious clique, running the black side of town. College students were chaperoned and not permitted to marry, own cars, or live in off campus housing.

And by the 1940s, the system was decaying and decadent. With the return of the GIs, who refused to tolerate such abuse, it was soon to collapse. Their motivations were to attend college, get married, get a good job, and have children. Bowing and scraping before petty tyrants was right out.

It represented a restoration of Christianity as a religious faith, not a tool for dominance and social control.

But even today, the damage from this remains. It is the foundation on which other anti-religious groups built their edifice. Groups with far different motivations, who hate Christianity because it is in the way of their often repugnant beliefs. Groups who want to inflict their own version of abusive social control.

Meanwhile, the parents who named their baby “Adolf Hitler” (whatever the surname was) lost custody of their child.
