This was written by a close friend of mine, Tim Thetford, and originally posted on his blog at Please Convince Me.
I was encouraged by a friend to watch Glenn Beck on his show last night. They were blown away by the things that he was saying. It wasnt the politics. It was the gospel. For those who dont know, Glenn Beck is a conservative television and radio personality and is also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) or Mormon. Let me say up front that I am not out to bash Glenn Beck or Mormons or the LDS church. I am simply saying that what Beck is describing is for the most part traditional, orthodox Christianity and not what Mormonism teaches.
During last nights show, with regard to Black Liberation Theology, Beck replies that what is missing, is grace. He continues (full transcript at the bottom of the post), Youre saved by grace. (SAVED BY GRACE appears on the screen.) You cannot earn your way into heaven. You cant! There is no deed, no random act of kindness, no amount of money to spread around to others that earns you a trip to heaven. It cant happen! Its earned by Gods grace alone. By believing that Jesus died on the cross for you, this is what Christians believe, as an individual; you make the choice. You know what I think is the biggest sin is; the biggest problem were going to have when we get up to the pearly gates?

I’m coming more and more to the conclusion that Beck in the only thing interesting at all in television. I never cared for him on radio all that much but his TV show is the only original, stimulating television I’ve seen in sometime.
I had no idea Glenn Beck was Mormon. I do not recall ever hearing him mention it.
He’s been going down the religious path for sometime now. I don’t want to be preached to by TV. I liked the old Glenn Beck better.
What I don’t get is that I *thought* Mormons were not believers in a “Christ died on the cross” salvation? Come to think of it, I can’t remember how their ideology differs from classic Protestant. Someone remind me please.
This is pure deception.. re-meaning words to fit his religious views.. to Mormons it is all about “feelings” a warmed heart ...a leading.. this is exactly what he is preaching... so even if it was possible even the” elect would be deceived”
Seek the truth, not in your feelings but in the word of God
For years, Beck has made a sincere attempt to put Biblical accuracy at the front of his presentation. He has not incorporated his LDS beliefs or any other denominational “sales” into his show.
The man deserves credit for accuracy and integrity. When he holds up Biblical principals with historic fact, he paints a compelling picture and deserves credit for it.
Glenn has said himself that he became a Mormon in order to be able to marry his hot wife.
As a believer (PCA) who has several relatives and friends in the LDS church, I find Beck articulating more mainstream protestant views than are common in Mormon theology. This is not a dig against Mormons as I believe that God has his remnant in many places. I just find Beck to be more “Christian” than Mormon, as I tend to be more “Christian” than Presbyterian. Now if he was Reformed he’d be perfect. 8~)
Thats what happens when one reads the works of the Founding Fathers and digs deeper into their worlds and the hope they had for the country. Beck is simply taking a hard line Founder's view of the country and the Constitution and applying them to today's political landscape.
Believe me, I'm no fundamentalist. I hold a lot of views that are not in keeping with religion, the Bible, and being a 'christian'. I don't claim to be either. But anyone who even reads and researches the founders, if they have any smarts at all, will realize Beck is right.
No, the Founders didn't establish the US as a Christian Nation. But they knew that, in order for the country to succeed, it was absolutely necessary that those in charge were, in fact, strong, principled, moral, christian men. Just look at some of their quotes.
“Im coming more and more to the conclusion that Beck in the only thing interesting at all in television”
I agree with you.
I agree..I try never to miss his program. He is a communications miracle for our time, in my view. When you consider the mountain load of information you get from him, you know that he has a research team unlike any other. Those who hate him never attack his facts, just his person..Tells you a lot about their IQ and their character.
If you are conservative, you already believe many of the Christian principles..Don’t steal, don’t covet what your neighbor has, don’t murder, tell lies, etc., etc.
As in all cults, the bottom line is, “Who do you say I am?”, a question Jesus asked of Peter. The answer to this question seperates Christians from christian like sects.
Mormons say Jesus is a brother to Lucifer, both created by God. Lucifer fell and Jesus went on to be the Messiah.
Chriatians believe that Jesus is part of the Godhead, fully God and fully man.

Well said!
No, he is not "preaching", per se. He is merely taking the hardline view that the Founders held in regards to the place of religion and the leadership of the new Nation. The Founders were, for the most part, a mix of denominations and belief systems (see link below). One thing they shared in common, however, was the belief that the leaders of their day, and the future, had to be men of strong, principled, moral values.

I’m a little confused by the article. Is it saying Mormonism is the correct way or traditional Christianity?
It seems to present both views.
I looooove Beck, but he needs to back away slightly from the God stuff while on air. It alienates viewers, and while it can certainly buttress one’s mind, heart, and spine religion has no place being anywhere near government.
Yes, this is what Mormons believe. No, I don't believe this. But more relevant to this post, have you ever heard Beck speaking of this? I haven't. If anything, I have heard him say over and over that whatever your faith, apply it to your view of the Nation and, overall, remember that it does not matter what man may do to you. In the end, you will have served your country well by maintaining the moral high ground.
I guess we should pray for Glenn?
